Mass and Weight Notes

Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object, and remains constant anywhere. Weight is a measure of gravitational force on an object, which can change depending on location relative to other massive objects like Earth or other planets. While mass is measured in grams or kilograms using a balance, weight is measured in newtons using a scale and can vary depending on the strength of gravity.

1 What is Matter
Mass and Weight

I can...
I can contrast mass and weight. I can measure the mass and volume of an object and calculate its density.

First you need to know matter...

everything is made of matter matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. made of atoms the "stuff" we are made of

Mass
all matter has mass mass is the amount of matter in an object how much "stuff" something is made of the amount of mass something has is the same anywhere in the universe you are always made of the same "stuff" no matter where you go mass only changes when the amount of matter changes how can you change your mass?

Measuring Mass

measured with a balance - triple beam balance units are grams(g)/kilograms(kg) check out this animation http://www.wisc-online.com/objects/ViewObject.aspx?ID=gch202

Weight
Weight is not the same as mass weight is the measure of gravitational force on an object 2 things will affect weight mass of the object more mass means more weight more mass, the harder Earth's gravity pulls to keep from flying away distance from another object (Earth) the further you are from Earth, the less its gravity can pull you

Weight can change

Your mass is always the same, but weight can change Gravity is not the same everywhere larger masses (the Sun) have more gravity smaller masses (Earth's moon) have less gravity more gravity, more weight less gravity, less weight

Measuring Weight
Weight is the measure of gravitational force. Weight isn't measuring you, but gravity pulling on you. the unit for weight is the newton (N) use a scale to measure weight Calculating weight 1 N is about equal to 100 g on Earth if you know the mass of the object, divide by 100 for the N (for Earth weight only) example - object has a mass of 230 g, so weight is 2.3 N

Contrast Mass and Weight

mass
measures amount of matter in an object mass is always constant anywhere in universe

weight
measures gravitational force on an object weight changes due to location compared to other large objects (Earth, other planets, etc.) measured with a scale units are newtons (N)

measured with a balance units are grams (g) or kilograms (kg)
