Zarzuela is a Spanish lyricdramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes, the latter incorporating operatic

and popular song, as well as dance. The etymology of the name is not totally certain, but some propose it may derive from the name of a Royal hunting lodge, the Palacio de la Zarzuela near Madrid, where, allegedly, this type of entertainment was first presented to the court. The palace was named after the place called "La Zarzuela" because of the profusion of brambles (zarzas) that grew there, and so the festivities held within the walls became known as "Zarzuelas". t is a melodrama with songs and dances that have a three-in-one-act play. It is intended to make the mass feeling towards love, fear, grief, sorrow or any emotional reactions sublime. It sometimes shows the political and social conditions of our country. It is a musical comedy. Rizal wrote a zarzuela entitled Junto Al Pasig (Beside the Pasig). It was staged at the Ateneo de Manila on December 8, 1880 on the occasion of the celebration of the Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception, patron saint of the college. There are two main forms of zarzuela: Baroque zarzuela (c.16301750), the earliest style, and Romantic zarzuela (c.18501950), which can be further divided into two.

Duplo was a poetical debate held by trained men and women in the ninth night, the last night of the mourning period for the dead. The male participants, bellacos , are the heads of the game.

Karagatan is literally an "open sea". This came from the legendary practice of testing the mettle of young men vying for a maiden's hand. The maiden's ring would be dropped into the sea and whoever retrieves it would have the girl's hand in marriage. This is one of the secular dramas generally held during the nine nights of vigil and prayers after someone's death or the first death anniversary when the family members put away their mourning clothes.
