Planting Calendar
For temperate/cool temperate areas of Australia This pdf gives you printable pages
There is one card for every calendar month. The size is equivalent to a standard 3 x 5 inch systems ling card so you can either print directly onto thick card or print on paper and then glue to cards.
Frost Tender Vegetables
All varieties in red and marked with are frost tender. Tomatoes, capsicums and eggplants, in particular, should be grown as seedlings in a warm spot (cold frame or solarium) to get an early start. Seeds of frost tender varieties can be sown one or two weeks before the last possible frost (if you are into gambling!) A plastic cloche covering the bed or row will also help extend the growing season.
Shade
Some vegetable seed will not germinate in hot weather. Shade is essential for the varieties marked in green. All seedlings benet from being under 50% shade cloth on hot, windy days and it is possible to extend the growing season for less heat tolerant varieties such as English Spinach by growing them under shade cloth in summer.
Planting Schedule
Large Kitchen Gardens & CSAs
One planting once every month will sufce to give year round harvesting. However, if it is possible sow several varieties of the one vegetable to extend the picking dates.
Restaurant Suppliers & Larger Scale Market Gardeners
Planting will have to be done more often. In the warmer months the smaller, fast growing crops such as lettuces, salad mix, radishes.... will have to be sown every 12 weeks to ensure consistent harvesting.
Ensuring Plenty Of Salad Greens For Winter
In cold areas growth slows down to almost nothing in the middle of winter. To ensure continuous harvesting of greens it is important to plant EXTRA seeds in the autumn months. This is indicated on the cards.
