Ref:SEAOC Seismic Design Manual Vol1:: Second Example Showing The Height Above The Raft

This document discusses calculating the fundamental natural period of vibration (Ts) of buildings according to the Indian Standard Code IS 1893-2002. It provides three examples: 1) Basements are excluded from height calculations if basement walls are connected to the ground floor deck. 2) An example showing how to calculate height above a raft foundation. 3) For this example, the basement levels are included in the height calculation because they are not connected to the ground floor. The example building has a ground floor, mezzanine, and 8 repeated floors above two basement levels.

As per IS code the basement is excluded.

Second example showing the height above the raft:

IS 1893-2002 (Part 1) 7.6 Fundamental Natural Period7.6.1 The approximate fundamental natural period of vibration ( Ts ), in seconds, of a moment-resisting frame building without brick in.fd panels may be estimated by the empirical expression:

where h = Height of building, in m. This excludes the basement storeys, where basement walls are connected with the ground floor deck or fitted between the building columns. But it includes the basement storeys, when they are not so connected. EXAMPLE 3: As per IS code the following example is including the basement. The figure shows a store house building consisting a GF,Mazzanine and 8 repeated floors and two basements. Live load and floor heights are shown in elevtion. Due to EQ loads it is required to : a. Calculate the story shear at each floor level and draw its distribution on the height of the building. b. Find the BMs and SFs acting at base level.

Plan.
