BS 8110-1997 Concrete Guide

Concrete is a composite material that is made by mixing cement, sand, gravel or crushed stone and water. The cement acts as a binding agent and when mixed with water forms a paste that binds the other components together. Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension and must therefore always be reinforced with steel bars to carry tensile loads.
