Assive Olar Rchitecture: Passive Cooling Using Double-Roofing For Energy Saving in Cooling and Ventilation

A ventilated double roof is proposed for passive cooling and energy saving in warm, humid climates like Mumbai and Chennai, and composite climates like Delhi. The double roof helps draw away warm air between the roof and ceiling to prevent excessive heat gain, while a low emissivity or reflective coating further reduces radiative heat transfer. Air is pulled from under the attic into an inclined space above the roof, carrying away heat that would otherwise enter the home.

Passive cooling using double-roofing for energy saving

in Cooling and Ventilation.

PASSIVE SOLAR ARCHITECTURE
.
USEFULNESS
Intention: Energy saving in Cooling and
ventilation.
Suitable Climatic zones :
Warm and Humid: Mumbai, Chennai
Composite: Delhi

VENTILATED DOUBLE ROOF
A ventilated double roof helps
to draw away warm air
between the roof and the
ceiling
prevents excessive heat gain
from the roof.
The radiative heat transfer
from the roof to the ceiling is
reduced by using low
emissivity or high reflective
coating (e.g. aluminum foil) on
either surface facing the
cavity.

Construction
APPLICATION
passive ventilation
system that pulls air
from the underbelly of
the attic into an inclined
air space above the roof
Heat that would have
gone into the house is
carried up and out
