Adam 4520

The ADAM-4520 is an RS-232 to RS-422/485 converter module that allows communication between a computer's RS-232 serial port and an RS-485 network. It provides isolation protection and intelligent control of the RS-485 bus direction without needing external handshaking signals. Configuration and programming of the module is easy using Advantech utility software.

ADAM-4520

RS-232 to RS-422/485 Converter

Introduction
Simple configuration, easy programming and supported by major DA & C packages -
these are just a few reasons to use Advantech's ADAM 4000 modules.
You can use the ADAM-4520 RS-232/RS-485 converter to change standard RS-232 port
signals into fully isolated RS-485 signals. This ADAM converter module along with an
ADAM-4510 (repeater) can automatically control the RS-485 bus direction without
external handshaking signals from the host. Host software written for half-duplex RS-232
may be used without modification. RS-485 bus control is completely transparent to the
user. The ADAM-4520 also provide protection for the host computer from potentially
destructive voltages which may appear on the RS-485 data lines.
Operating temperature: 14 to 158F (-1000 to 70C)
EMI: Meets FCC Class A
Storage temperature: -13 to 185f (-25 to 85C)
Humidity: 5 to 95%, non-condensing
Easy-to-use menu-driven utility software make configuration and calibration a snap. Its
terminal emulation program lets you easily read from and write to ADAM modules.
Writing application programs with this software (GENIE 2.0) is simple, you can learn the
basics in just a few minutes.
Features
Intelligent RS-485 Control
The RS-485 standard supports half-duplex communication. This means that just two wires
are needed to both transmit and receive data. Handshaking signals (such as RTS, Request
To Send) are normally used to control the direction of the data flow. A special I/O circuit
in the ADAM-4510 and ADAM-4520 automatically senses the direction of the data flow
and switches the transmission direction. No handshaking signals are necessaryyou can
build an RS-485 network with just two wires. This RS-485 control is completely
transparent to the user. Software written for half-duplex RS-232 works without
modification.
Isolation
The ADAM-4520's Opto-isolators provide 500 VDC of isolation to protect the host
computer from ground loops and destructive voltage spikes on the RS-485 data lines.
