Understanding Malaria in Indonesia

Malaria is a common parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitoes that infects over 5% of the world's population and causes over one million deaths annually. In Indonesia, malaria remains a significant public health issue, particularly in eastern parts of the country where there are many swamps. Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites and transmitted via the bites of infected Anopheles mosquitoes, with P. falciparum being the most lethal variant and a leading cause of death from the disease. Symptoms of malaria include fever, chills, and fatigue in cyclical patterns depending on the Plasmodium species. Prevention focuses on avoiding mosquito bites with protective clothing and medications administered before and during trips to malaria-endemic

Malaria

Malaria is the most common parasitic disease of human. Approximately 5% of the

worlds population is infected, and it causes over one million deaths each year. In Indonesia,
malaria is a public health problem. Morbidity of this disease is still quite high, especially in
the eastern part of Indonesia. It happens because there are many swamps in eastern part of
Indonesia.
Malaria is a protozoan infection of red blood cells transmitted by the bite of blood-
feeding female anopheline mosquito. Plasmodia are protozoan parasites of malaria. There are
four species of Plasmodium that infect humans in general. The three benign malarias,
Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, and Plasmodium malaria, are relatively unusual to
make severe disease, although on the island of New Guinea Plasmodium vivax is associated
with significant mortality. Almost all deaths and severe disease are caused by Plasmodium
falciparum. One of the complication like cerebral malaria is usually caused by this species.
In the early stages, malaria symptoms are sometimes similar to those of many other
infections caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Symptoms may include fever, chills,
headache, sweats, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. But actually, there are some variation in
malaria fever episodes. It depends on the type of parasite that infected with. Episodes may
occur every 48 hours for Plasmodium vivax and plasmodium ovale infection, and every 72
hours for Plasmodium malariae infection. On the other hand, Plasmodium falciparum does
not have a clear cycle so that the period of fever could not be determined.
Prevention of malaria involves protecting against mosquito bites and taking
antimalarial medicines. But public health officials strongly recommend that young children
and pregnant women avoid traveling to areas where malaria is common. Protective clothes
such as long pants and long-sleeved shirts may be used in the outside area. Medicine to
prevent malaria is also most effective when it is used before travelling to endemic areas.
Moreover the dosage exactly as prescribed and for the length of time required must be noted
clearly
