NE (NEBRASKA) STANDARDS [Link]
With this lesson, our students will be able to meet the curriculum standards set by Ne. (Nebraska)
Standards. The students will be learning their spelling words and applying them to a story they make
up, which is meeting the Ne (Nebraska) Standards LA 4.1.5.a. This states that students will be able
to build and use specific grade level vocabulary. Along with this, they will be able to identify and
describe key elements of literary texts. This is the LA 4.1.6.a on the Ne (Nebraska) Standards which
deals with characters, setting, plot, point of view and them. Not only will they be determining the
characters and plot and other parts of a story, they will be using their vocabulary/spelling words to
make this story. They will be improving their use of technology while learning to use Glogster.
This lesson will allow expand their understanding of spelling words. While learning the spelling and
meaning of the words they will have to use their creativity to think of a story to write about Nebraska
history, specifically the Oregon Trail. They will need to remember their spelling words along with
the key story elements including theme, characters, plot and setting.
Students will need to use a computer or laptop for this project. They will need to look up and research
information about the Oregon Trail. The students will also use their computer to be able to make their
glogster for their project.
Objective 1: Students will individually write out meanings for their spelling words.
Objective 2: Students will research information on the Oregon Trail in small groups.
Objective 3: Students will broaden their technology skills while learning how to use Glogster.
Objective 4: Students will individually brainstorm and write out the plot and setting of their story.
Objective 5: Students will individually create and organize a story about the Oregon Trail using their
spelling words on Glogster.
To prepare for this lesson, the students will have to do research on the Oregon Trail using classroom
resources, need to know the meanings of their spelling words, put together the basics elements of a
story, and know basics about Glogster.
Students will be using all the stages in Blooms Taxonomy:
-Create: Students will create a Glogster piece from knowledge gained and share their stories with
the class.
-Evaluate: While researching the Oregon Trail, they will be able to evaluate if information found
using internet sources in class are true or false.
-Analyze: Students will be analyzing information about the Oregon Trail, and they will apply it to
their story with their spelling words.
-Apply: Students will be able to know the meaning of their spelling words and apply it to their story.
Also they will apply their knowledge learned to make their Globster.
-Understand: Students must understand their spelling words and their meanings, structure of a story
along with Oregon Trail history, and the Glogster technology.
-REMEMBER: They will first need to remember the definitions of the spelling words, and how to

use Glogser.
Lastly, the students will be using different aspects that they are learning and putting them together for
one project on Glogster.

[Link] will receive their vocabulary lists (spelling list) and broaden their knowledge by learning
the meaning of each word. This will be down as they put the definition into their own words.
2. Students will use classroom resources such as library books, class worksheets, their text social
studies text but and maybe resort to computers to research the Oregon Trail in Nebraska, specifically.
3. After the students have their research and information of Oregon Trail in Nebraska, they will get
on Glogster.
4. On Glogster they will begin to organize their stories by writing out the plot, setting, theme ect..
5. Students now will have the information to put their story together while including their spelling
words that also become their vocabulary words.
6. They will now know and understand the meaning of their spelling words along with knowledge of
the elements to make a story, and the knowledge to use Glogster.
Success in this lesson will be measured on how well their Glogster is put together (Organization).
Success will be seen if spelling words are in the right context, and make sense with their definition.
Success will be seen if the story makes sense with the history, landscape, terminology (animals,
scenery, or dress) of the Nebraska Oregon Trail. This lesson could be added to future lessons,
because students can use Glogster for multiple different activities. The students can make their
Glogster as creative or as simple as they feel. This will show their creative side which we will be
looking at. Their Globsters can become a collection of stories or projects using the English element to
showcase the learning done throughout the lessons learned in social studies (or any other class).
Metacognition can be applied when the students are thinking about what they are putting into their
stories and how they can incorporate their spelling words.
