Child Development Observation Techniques

The document discusses observation and assessment of young children in an early childhood education setting. It notes that observation is important for curriculum planning and identifying strengths and weaknesses in developmental domains, which include language, physical, social/emotional, cognitive, and creativity skills. Some observation tools mentioned are play-based assessment, child interviews, visual documentation, and video recording. The author would have the parents of the observed child volunteer more in the classroom. They suggest a new outdoor activity called "View the World" to enhance all developmental domains by exploring outside, taking walks, and discussing colors and shapes. The curriculum used at the observed center was Creative Curriculum.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT 201: OBSERVATION, DOCUMENTATION AND SUPPORT

Alma Vargas

Final Self- Evaluation

1. Why do we observe and assess young children?
The reason we observe and assess young children is for curriculum
planning. The teacher can also identify a childs weakness or
strengths in the development domains. By identifying a weakness
a teacher can provide one-to-one activities.

2. List all of the developmental domains

Language
Physical (fine & gross)
Social/Emotional
Cognitive
Creativity

3. Name 4 Observation Tools utilized in the early

childhood classroom.

Play-based assessment
Child interviews
Visual documentation
Video Recording

CHILD DEVELOPMENT 201: OBSERVATION, DOCUMENTATION AND SUPPORT

4. If you had one thing you would change about

the child you observed what would it be?
One thing that I would change about the child I observed is that I
would have the parents volunteer. Having the parents in class they
will be able to see the activities he is doing in class and they can
practice them at home.

5. If you had an opportunity to create an activity

that has yet to be developed, but will enhance all
the developmental domains, what would that
activity be? Put a Name to the activity and the
benefits.
For this particular center it lacks an outdoor playground or an area
to go outside to play. So the activity I would suggest is View the
World, children can out to explore, take a walk and point out the
different trees, flowers, discuss the different color and shape of the
homes. The children will enhance all of the development domains.

6. What curriculum was used in the center/home

care or CPS school in which you observed?
Creative Curriculum
