Russia's Annexation Plans for Abkhazia

Russia is taking steps to tighten its control over the breakaway Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in order to undermine Georgia's ambitions to join the European Union. This includes implementing integration agreements that would make the regions effectively part of Russia. While the elites in Abkhazia and South Ossetia may be wary of completely losing their autonomy, they are dependent on Russia for security and financial support. By exerting stronger influence over the regions, Russia can more directly interfere in Georgia's domestic politics and tilt the country away from aligning with the West.

Is likely to utilise whatever means it has to derail Georgias European ambitions.

various economic, political, and military pressure points that Russia can target.

Abkhazia-South Ossetia
Russia lays the groundwork for the annexation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Tighter control of Abkhazia and South Ossetia will increase the security risks for
Georgia. both regions, but especially South Ossetia, depend heavily on Russia for
their security and financial stability, the prospect of becoming just another region of
Russia with no regional rights does not seem attractive to elites in Abkhazia and
South Ossetia.
Abkhazia received significant concessions from Moscow; most prominently Abkhazia
retained some control over the military and prevented a massive Russian
procurement of Abkhaz real estate. Tighter control over Abkhazia and South Ossetia
will also allow Moscow to interfere in Georgian domestic affairs more efficiently and
attempt to tip the political balance in the country to its advantage.
The Russian governments plan for a quick implementation of integration
agreements with Abkhazia and South Ossetia mirror the geopolitical calculations in
Moscow. Russian policymakers apparently predict that their countrys appeal to its
neighbors will decrease as a result of the standoff with the West. Russias capacity
to use hard power will also suffer.
