Part One: and 6th Week Fall 14 PDF

The lesson plan incorporates the use of SmartMusic for students to practice individually and be assessed on their mastery of pieces. Students will first warm up together and rehearse as a class. They will then each spend 5-10 minutes in practice rooms using SmartMusic before completing an assessment on their assigned section. The goal is for students to show understanding of the piece by working through practice exercises and scoring at least 90% on the assessment. The teacher will provide guidance during rehearsal and instruction on SmartMusic to ensure students can successfully complete the individual assignment.

Part One
My main goal of creating this lesson plan is to develop a fun day
in the class that incorporates technology and creativity. There are
many styles of activities that can be used for my topic. I chose to base
my lesson plan on music in school. I havent decided between middle
and high school band. Some characteristics of creative lessons in the
classroom are more attention on the teacher, greater desire to learn,
and the students are more interested in the subject. Some tools that I
may use in my lesson plan are smart music or the DAW bundle. Both
these tools are technology based and allow the students to practice
repetition of the music and to also be creative when composing their
own piece. Another creative opportunity I could use in my lesson plan
would be to re arrange the room allowing people to sit next to
someone who play a different instrument then them. Even though this
isnt technology based, it still encourages the students to think outside
of the box while they are playing.

a. A. Skills and Techniques/Performance
MHSIB.1 - Singing, alone and with others. a. Sing to
recognize fundamentals of tone production. b. Sing to
match pitch through call and response (diatonic intervals,
major and minor keys).
MHSIB.2 - Performing on instruments, alone and with other.
a. Demonstrate characteristic tone quality utilizing proper
embouchure, playing position, posture, breathing
techniques, articulation, and appropriate percussion
technique.
b. Demonstrate proper warm-up techniques through the
use of long tones, lip slurs, chorales, major scales,
chromatic scale, and technical exercises that increase the
playing range.
Use the following ensemble skills as a means of
interpreting the performance of musical literature: dynamic
expression, style, blend and balance, steady tempo,
rhythmic accuracy, intonation, and rehearsal etiquette.
MHSIB.3 - Reading and notating music
a. Identify standard notation symbols for pitch, rhythm,
dynamics, tempo, articulation, expression, and key
signatures.

b. Interpret the musical terms incorporated in the

literature.
c. Demonstrate an understanding of duple, triple, and
quadruple simple meter rhythmic patterns through a
systematic counting procedure.
C. Critical Analysis/Investigate
MHSIB.6 - Listening to, analyzing, and describing music
MHSIB.7 - Evaluating music and music performances
MHSIB.9 - Understanding music in relation to history and
culture
b. Only technology used is metronome to keep beat while
rehearsing
c. Activities include sight-reading and rehearsing pieces
d. a challenge with this lesson plan could be that it is to rigid,
and does not leave room for error.

a. Band template:
1. MU.A.4, MUA.34 and MU.A2.4, MU.A.3.4, MUC1.4, MUD1.4,
MU.E.1.4
2. No technology shown in this lesson plan, but could easily be
added
3. Activities or tasks the student may have to do would be to play
a specific part in the piece individually
4. a challenge with this lesson plan is that they give you the
standards to follow but they dont specifically say what you are
learning each day.
b. Jazz band
1. MU. A.2.4, MU A.3.4 and MU.A.2.4, MU.A.3.4, MU.B.1.4M
MU.C.1.4, MU.D.2.4, MU.E.1.4
2. This is a very similar style lesson plan to the band template
above, therefore no technology is specified but technology such
as smart music could be incorporated into this lesson
3. Activities include listening to the style of music and
determined what time period the pieces belong in according to
that.
4. A potential challenge with this lesson plan could be that it
doesnt allow students to be creative during class.
Part Three
The three components I chose to focus on were the objectives, skill
application, and guided practice/ group practice.

a. This lesson plan clearly described all the objectives that
the students and teachers are focusing on in class. It

breaks the objectives down to show each part specifically.

Following the objectives, the teacher listed things to know,
understand, and do. I found this to be very useful. This is
where the application part came into play in this lesson
plan. The teacher listed what they must know in order to
progress and how this specific technique can be useful
when playing. They also did a really good job coming up
with different ideas of how the students could practice
some of the skills they learned in class. The teacher
specified that they will have daily review of scales, music
and rhythms, which encourages the students to be an
active participant every day.
2. http://band4me.org/resources.html
a. For the band lesson plan I liked how it allowed the teachers
flexibility when planning what they are going to do for the
day. There was just enough amount of structure, but also
enough space to allow he teachers to get creative with the
activities they are going to be doing that day in class. This
lesson plan did very well with clearly stating the objectives
that would be used in class. The lesson plans objectives
were broken down by warm up and then literature studies.
The teacher listed that they may mention, How musical
excerpts relates to other discipline. When the teacher
explains how the music can relate to other aspects of
school the students do not understand the concepts as well
as they would if they applied the musical concepts
themselves. The lesson plan does not specify any activities
involving specific activities for group rehearsal or guided
practice. This is the only downfall of this lesson plan. It
would be good if the teacher designed it so group practice
was included.
b. The jazz band lesson template was very similar to the
regular band lesson plan. The standards were different,
which shows that the teacher specifies the objectives
based on the class specifically. The format only changed to
accommodate the different genres of music this class
would be listening to. This lesson plan also made a
comment about the teacher making remarks throughout
class with regards to music relating to other topics. It
would be more effective if activities were listed to allow the
creativity in the classroom. The teacher also left the guided
practice sections on the lesson plan, which allows for
flexibility in the classroom. For this lesson plan specifically
it was only a template so there were spaces where the
teacher could fill in later.

Lesson Plan
Introduction: The class will start by performing a simple warm up
including scales and a few exercises from a technique book. Then the
class will rehearse as a whole. After 30 minutes of rehearsing as a
group, individuals will go into a practice room to work on the piece for
5-10 minutes each then they will complete their individual
assessments using SmartMusic.
Main Activity: The students will be using SmartMusic to practice playing
their individual parts. They should spend about 5-10 minutes doing so.
During this individual time the students can practice sections from the
piece we are working on in class. Depending on how confident the
student feels with that specific piece of music, they can select small
sections to work on. Once they select what they are going to practice
they can they choose to practice with the metronome on or off. After
they complete their individual practice they will be instructed to
complete their assignment. The assignment consists of the students
playing the piece all the way through or only through a specific spot
depending on what is assigned. Once the student plays they are
graded on accuracy; if the students are not satisfied with the grade
they receive then they can redo the assignment until they are. After
they get the score they are happy with they can submit it for their final
grade.
Guidance: During class I will work with the students through rehearsal.
I will give the students clear instructions on how they are supposed to
complete the smart music assignment. If it is the first time the
students are using smart music I will show them step by step how to do
it. If it is not I will make sure I am available during this time incase
students have question about their assignment.
Assessment: The students will complete a smart music assignment
individually. The piece they will be assessed on is the one performed at
the beginning of class and the one they were practicing during their
practice period with SmartMusic. I will want to see the students made a
90% accuracy on every assignment to ensure they fully comprehend
and know how to play all the rhythms and notes correctly.
Technological Resources: The technology allows students to get
creative with how they spend their practice time. They arent forced to
sit and practice one specific way; there are many factors they could
change. Using SmartMusic allows the students the freedom to get
creative and spend their time most effectively for themselves. This tool
also increases students interest in music which will encourage them to

explore more pieces of music using the tool SmartMusic.
