Impact
Personal identity refers to the characteristics
that I attribute to myself or that others ascribe
to me. I consider myself an artist, an identity
that shapes the way I see the world. For
example, I approach life with constant
creativity and am able to see things for their
potential.
The most impactful social group I belong to is
the church. Once again, my Christian identity
informs the way I approach the world and
gives my life meaning. It is a constant call to
live more simply and justly in a world filled
with disparity.
I grew up in a small village in Sierra Leone and
moved to Colorado when I was eight. My time
in Sierra Leone taught me how to engage
cross-culturally and shaped my worldview.
My role as a neighbor has greatly impacted
me. I have learned that my neighbors have
more wisdom and knowledge to teach me
than I could ever teach them. Ive learned
that our humanity is bound together.
According to Banks, multicultural citizenship is
essential in a world that is becoming more
and more interconnected. This concept allows
individuals to retain their cultural heritage
while also assimilating to the place they find
themselves. It requires finding a balance
between cultural, national, and global
identification (2004, p. 294).
I identify as a Caucasian of European ancestry.
This is my cultural identity yet cannot limit my
behavior in a global world. Learning about my
national and global identity requires a
suspension of assumptions in order to humbly
learn more about different cultures around the
world.
