COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE

The rules to form comparative and superlative adjectives:


1. One syllable adjectives
Comparative: add er cheap cheaper
Superlative: add est cheap cheapest
2. One syllable adjectives ending in e
Comparative: add r nice nicer
Superlative: add st nice nicest
3. One syllable adjectives ending in consonant vowel
consonant
Comparative: double last consonant and add er big
bigger
Superlative: double last consonant and add est big
biggest
*Dont double if adjective ends in w x or y* new
newest
4. Two syllable adjectives ending in y
Comparative: replace y with ier happy happier
Superlative: replace y with iest happy happiest
5. Two or more syllable adjectives
Comparative: add more or less beautiful
more/less beautiful
Superlative: add the most or the least beautiful
the most/least beautiful
6. Irregular adjectives
Good better the best
Bad worse the worst
Far - further furthest
7. Equality and inequality
As + adjective + as Im as tall as my brother
Not as + adjective + as Im not as intelligent as my
father
8. Modifying comparatives
Much/ a lot/ far/ a little/ a bit/ slightly + comparative
adjective
She is a lot thinner than her sister
9. Modifying superlatives

By far/ easily/ nearly + superlative adjective
