[Link]: Sieve Analysis of Fine and Course Aggregate
Purpose:
1- To determine the particle size distribution
(gradation) .
2- To determine the maximum size of Aggregate.
3- To determine the fineness modulus .
Standard:
ASTM - AASHTO
An-Najah National
University
Apparatus:
- Standerd sieves and pans
- Quartering machine
- Mechanical sieve shaker balance
- Drying oven
- Round pans
- Small scoop and brushes
Procedure:
1. Take the sample and put it in oven to make it dry and
its weight become constant.
2. Put the sample in the pan.
3. Stir the sample to get good distribution of Aggregate.
4. Make the Aggregate as a cone to divide it by quarter
method.
5. After divide the aggregate to (4) equal quarter we take
the weight of the sample size (5kg).

6. Put the sample in large sieves and shake it by hand
with rotational move above the pan.
7. We put the sample which reach to the pan in the small
sieves.
8. And we put all small sieves at the Shaker and turn it
on for (10)minutes.
9. At the final we take the weight from every sieve and
comparison the result with the standard.

Discussion:
We use the sieve analysis to sort aggregates according
to its size (coarse, fine and fines), which help us to
know about the aggregates properties.
Source of error:
- Human error (In calculations)
- Error in the measurement tools (In the balance)
