Aggregate Abrasion Test Procedure

This document describes a procedure for determining the percent abrasion of an aggregate sample according to ASTM standards. The procedure involves weighing an initial aggregate sample, sieving it, placing a portion in a Los Angeles machine with steel spheres for 15 minutes, then sieving and weighing the sample that passes through a 1.7mm sieve. The percentage loss is calculated by dividing the weight passing the sieve by the original sample weight and multiplying by 100. The results and percentage loss are used to evaluate whether the aggregate is suitable for different applications. Potential sources of error are also noted.

Purpose:
To determine the percent of abrasion of aggregate

Standard:
- ASTM

Apparatus:
- Los Angeles machine
- Balance
- Sieves
- Abrasive charge

We weight sample of aggregate (5000 gm) as the

following:
We shake the sample on sieves
(19mm,12.5mm,9.5mm).
We take the retained from sample on sieve (12.5mm)
(2500 gm).
and we take from the retained sample on sieve
(9.5mm)(2500 gm).

We put the sample in Los Angeles machine and put

above the sample steel spheres (No. 11 large size 5 &
small size 6)
Turn on the machine and wait for 15 minutes.
After that we take the sample from the machine and
shake it at sieve (1.7mm)
weight the retained on the sieve.

Results:
After we shake the sample at sieve (1.7mm) we find the
sample was grinded at the machine and the percent of fine
aggregate become large.
the weight of retained at the sieve was (

In this experiment, we determine the percent of abrasion
of aggregate that determines which is the best place where
we can use the aggregate.

Source of error:
- Error in the measurement tools
- Human error
