Self-Introduction
My name is Joseph Arms and I am working to be a teacher at ASU. I have so far an
associates degree from Glendale community college. I do have a list of work experience though,
starting with Triumph fabrication, a company that makes things like airplane parts, shells for new
engines, as well as shells for bombs for the military. I have worked at Pride Group as security for
the Cardinals football games. The latest job I had was working construction primarily working
on flipping houses.
I want to be a teacher because I enjoy have discussions with others, being able to farther
my own knowledge and understanding. I want others to be open-mind and to articulate what they
mean; to be able to share opinions and come to an understanding. I want to make them enjoy
their learning and to show them that the world is complicated, that nothing is black and white. I
want my students to speak and let their thoughts be heard and in doing so I might grow too.
I share the same beliefs as Madeline Hunter, Dr. Fred Jones and Dr. Harry Wong in that
children have a right to education. I know that as I teacher I need to have the appropriate
resources to help all students. It does not matter if they have a disability or are still learning
English, I have to make do whatever I can to help them learn. There is no such thing as a helpless
child, all can be successful.

To start off I put the students desk in a horseshoe formation. I thought of Dr. Fred Jones
and how as teachers we need to have room to move all around the students. In this arrangement I
can walk behind students or move to the corners without having things in the way. I also have an
interior loop that allows me to move to many of the students easily, besides I like to move
around. On the graph the desk look like they are spaced out with room to walk through, although
this is just room for the students get in to and out of. If a student close to the center of the room
needs my help I will be in front of them, if the student is in the back row I will be behind them to
help. It also makes it easy to pair up students with an elbow partner. The desks can be moved
together to be in pairs easily and quickly. The reason for having more desks on the sides is that
since this is a social studies class students need to be able to speak. Having them face each other
help students speak to the class. Also I like to put the class into historical groups and have them

debate one another. Splitting the class into two is easy this way. Now for the little island of desks
at the back, they are not there for the troublemakers. But with some of the class activities there is
a small third party and these students make up that part otherwise they get split into the two
sides.
The desks themselves are your standard single student desks. They do not swivel or any
other cool thing that can distract students. Also the big table it part of the small island because
that is the most effective place for it. I cannot put it in with the two sides because those students
have less room to maneuver. The large table is for students who need it first of all. If no one
needs to be there than any student will be able to sit there.
The bookshelf is by the door because this way, students can grab a book on the way to
their seats. There is enough room for students to get to and from the bookshelf; it is not stuck in a
tight corner. The same thing goes for my locked cabinet, material cabinet and my locked
teachers cabinet. They are all in the corners of the room to allow students to move around the
classroom easily. They are safely it is out of the way of students but easily accessible for when I
need to get into them. All of these items take up quite a bit of room and I do not want them in the
way, so corners are where they are going.
In another corner is my desk with a filing cabinet right next to it. The key here is to make
sure that the students desks and mine are far enough away so that a student cannot look at my
computer screen. I do not want my desk as an obstacle in the classroom; I want students to feel
like they can approach me. The long part of the desk is on the wall because I do not want
students putting things on my desk. That is how things get lost. I put papers where they need to
go. The filing cabinet has my paper resources for my classes. Extra copies of worksheets and
documents, etc. With the filing cabinet next to my desk when a student asks for another copy of a
worksheet I can just slide over instead of putting it across the room.
The trash bins are located by the door with one extra recycle bin next to my desk. I need
one next to me for when I want to throw something away. Students can use the one next to me or
the one next to the door. The reason behind this is that I believe it to be easy to throw things
away at the end of class or at the beginning. So having them next to the door makes it a quick
action. I know I am going to have a lot of paper work so I will need a recycle bin next to my
desk. I do not plan on eating at my desk so I do not need a trash bin there.

6
In the middle of the room is a large round table. This is where homework will be turned
in as well as other materials I was not able to hand to them as they walk in. I also plan to have
some other things relating to history on this table such as extra credit opportunities. Homework
will be placed in the correct hour bin on this table.
In the back of the classroom on the left is where the bulletin board is. Since I cannot have
it next to the door this is where it is. Students are able to access it easily to see what is going on
in the school. This leads me into announcements quite well; basically announcements will be
broadcast through the smart board in the front of the class. So there is no need for a T.V.
everything will be from the internet or my computer.
The smartboard itself is between two black boards. The smartboard will be as close to the
middle as possible. It will be the most used piece of technology I will be using as it helps
students take notes on what I am saying as well as gives them visuals. The reason for it being in
the front of the classroom is pretty self-explanatory; students will be looking up front most of the
time so the board needs to be there for them to get information. The reason for two blackboards
on the side is because chalk is cheaper than whiteboard markers and does not smell bad.
Procedures
Beginning of class

Teacher will greet students at the door to give papers relating to that days assignment and

to enforce school rules.

Students will turn in homework at turn in station

Students will sit in their assigned seats

Students will check the smartboard for the bell work or other instructions

As students are doing the bell work teacher will be taking attendance and collecting

homework from the turn in station

The class will talk about the bell work normally through Popsicle sticks

Ending of class

Students will not begin to put their things away until the teacher has said it is ok to do so

There will always be a closure with a ticket out the door that the students must complete

Once the students are done with the ticket out the door they can pack up

Transitions

The teacher will give any necessary instructions before students start

Instructions will always be on the board so students can reread it

The teacher will have an auditory and visual signal to bring the class back together, eyes

and ears with a raised hand.

Upon hearing the signal students will give the teacher their full attention so the class can

go on to the next thing

Each task students do will be timed appropriately

If a student finishes early they are to sit quietly and wait, they can do homework or read a

book
Collecting homework

Homework will be collected at the beginning of class as students put their homework in

the homework bin before going to their seats

Handing back work:

Graded work will be given back at the end of class while students are doing the closure

Comments will be written on assignments to help and encourage students

If students have questions about grade they can make an arrangement to see each other

before or after school

Also grades will be posted with students numbers in my classroom window

Materials for lesson

Books will be in the bookshelf and only needed when the board says they will be used

All other materials will be handed out as students walk into the class or on the table in the

middle of the room

Student absences

If a student is absent, they are responsible for their make-up work

Copies of the unit papers will be on the middle table so students just need to grab what

they have missed

Absent students will get two days to turn in their makeup work for every day missed,

unless otherwise stated, before it becomes late

Students must ask the teacher for work that is later than the current unit

Late work

Late work will be accepted but the highest grade possible is 80%

Students will have to notify the teacher via email if some sort of emergency happened

that prevented them from doing their homework

Grading and recording student work

Test and quizzes will be turned in after a day

Worksheets and short answers should be returned after two days

Essays and papers should be returned after a week

Students will see feedback on assignments

The lowest grade students can earn on turned in assignments is 50% that includes test and

quizzes.
o

It is still failing but this should not discourage students from giving up on the

Students can get a better grade on tests and quizzes by making corrections, each

class
correction is worth half a point.
o

If a student earned less than 50% on a test or quiz and wants to make corrections

it would not boost their grade until they got past 50% by making corrections.
Communicating with parents

Parent questions and concerns will be address within 24 hours of contacting teacher

Parents can reach the teacher through email or phone

If this is not possible a meeting can be arranged

Consideration for diverse learners

The classroom procedures will provide structure and order to the classroom for all

students

The classroom procedures will be taught and practice in the classroom based on Dr.

Wong belief that procedure should be taught and not told

The procedures will be on the wall at all times for students to read

Like Dr. Lavoies philosophy students will practice the procedures in class

Diverse learners will be met with patience and understanding to meet the classroom

procedures

IEPs and 504 plans will be followed so students can get the most out of their learning

experience

9
Rules and Consequences
There will be five specific rules that will be in place in the classroom that are based on
the research of Dr. Wong and Dr. Lavoie. All students will benefit from these rules as they will
provide order and structure to the classroom. The rules will be taught on the first day of school
and retaught if necessary onward. The rules and consequences will be posted next to the
procedures in the classroom. I believe these rules will benefit the learning experience of all
students and are necessary because all students have a right to an education.
Classroom Rules

Appropriate and intelligent language will be used at all times

Stay in assigned seats unless otherwise directed by teacher

Electronic devices will be out of sight

The teacher dismisses the classroom

Students will arrive to class on time and be prepared when the bell rings

Consequences will be consistent and enforceable by following due process. Violations of

classroom, school, and district rules will be faced with the appropriate consequences.
Considerations will be taken based on students IEP or 504 plans if necessary.
Consequences

First offense- warning/conference

Second offense- call home

Third offense- detention

Fourth offense- administration referral

*the teacher reserves the right to skip steps based upon the severity of the violation.
These rules coincide with the teaching philosophy of Dr. Wong, Dr. Jones and Madeline

Hunter that children have a right to an education. These rules bring order to the lives of some
students that might not have any. This is a place they can count on to be constant and a place for
growth because all children matter and all can be successful.
