What is Makerspaces?
It is an extension of innovative learning techniques such as project-based and
challenge based learning.
It is a new learning environment where students are able to work hands on
with new technologies.
It helps foster collaboration with classmates, partnership with others, and
creating new and unique ideas.
Makerspaces is best implemented in elementary level classrooms and librarylike environments. It can function in a classroom environment along with the
curriculum, or it may also be a stand alone class on its own.
Challenges for Implementation in the Classroom
Makerspaces have many benefits that help the students get hands on experience however,
they come with many challenges as well.
Funding- classrooms need to be able to obtain certain materials for each Makerspaces
activity. (example: students learning how to code and create websites need computers)
Space- with all these materials classrooms needed to implement a Makerspaces
program, there has to be enough room in the class for the students to be able to use the
hands on materials.
Standardize Curriculum- The largest hiccup for Makerspaces, teachers are too focused on
testing and not utilizing Makerspaces. Students are then missing out on interactive
lessons that will help them with 21st century skills.
When Can We See Makerspaces in Schools?
Makerspaces are being used currently and will continue to
grow within the year.
Schools are utilizing these spaces after school and on the
weekends as well as during school hours.
Currently there are 50 Makerspaces in the U.S.- 20 are in
schools. 1-Korea.
1.8 Million people have used Makerspaces so far.
Additional Information
Following the lead of the Maker Movement, Makerspaces looks to bring the
classroom into the 21st Century.
Makerspaces as a method looks to bring students out of traditional
education and into the new workforce climate of engineering and creativity.
It can help new skill sets that students will need when they enter careers
that may not even exist yet
The goal of this whole brain learning method looks to immerse students in
their learning and enhance the educational shift to deeper learning
approaches
