Measuring Dissolved Oxygen in Water

In this lab, students measured dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in bottles of pond water under different light, salinity, and temperature conditions to determine net primary productivity (NPP). Initial DO measurements were taken before the bottles were covered with varying layers of screens to control light levels. After 24 hours, final DO measurements were taken and used to calculate gross primary productivity (GPP) and NPP. The independent variables were the light screens, bottles, and pond water, while the dependent variables were the DO levels.

Artifact:

Summary:
In this lab, we used various methods to measure the amount of
dissolved oxygen in water. The dissolved oxygen is produced by
photosynthesis and is depleted by respiration which uses the oxygen to
create energy from glucose. The oxygen that is left available for organisms
is the net primary productivity (npp); the total amount of oxygen produced is
the gross productivity. We measured these by taking initial DO levels and
then final DO levels after we let them sit. We are going to be measuring the
net productivity of the different bottles of water which are under different
light conditions, salinity, and temperature compared to the initial
measurement. We took 6 bottle of pond water, and we covered them with
varying layers of screens ranging from 100%light down to 0%. We let the
bottles sit for 24 hours after initial DO levels were taken. We then took final
DO levels to determine GPP and NPP. Our independent variables were the
screens, bottles, and pond water. Our dependant variables were the DO
levels. EX) 2.D.1:b, 4.A.6:b, d

Reflection:
The most important thing about this lab and artifact was teaching
students how GPP and NPP levels can change in certain conditions in ponds
and lakes. I would like to study how light affects the GPP and NPP levels
further, and I still struggle with how temperature can affect DO levels.
