2.D.1: b, 4.A.6: b, d
The purpose of this lab is to see how chemical and physical factors affect dissolved oxygen
in water. Dissolved oxygen (DO) are the microscopic bubbles of oxygen(gaseous) that are in water
and are available to aquatic organisms for respiration. Respiration is the process of breathing and
is needed for primary production (production of energy). Many things can have an effect on
primary production such as nutrients, light, and hydrography. GPP and NPP play a role in
primary productivity as well. GPP is the amount of energy primary producers create in a given
amount of time (total amount of energy converted into chemical energy through photosynthesis).
NPP is the remaining energy after respiration occurs and can be found by the following equation:
NPP = GPP - respiration.
In this lab, we used six bottles of pond water. We covered them with varying amounts of
screens all the way from zero percent light up to one hundred percent light. The bottles sat for
twenty four hours. Final and initial dissolved oxygen levels were recorded in order to determine
the gross and the net primary productivity. The independent variables were the percent light,
salinity level, and temperature. The temperature was also a control due to the room being climate
controlled. The dependent variable was the dissolved oxygen level. The constants were dissolved
oxygen kits, salinity, and temperature.
