Triamterene: Uses, Risks, and Nursing Care

Triamterene is a potassium-sparing diuretic used to treat edema associated with conditions like congestive heart failure and nephrotic syndrome. It is taken orally once daily at doses of 50-100mg. Common side effects include gastrointestinal issues, dizziness, and electrolyte imbalances. Triamterene is contraindicated in patients with renal disease, liver disease, or hyperkalemia due to increased risk of further hyperkalemia. Nurses should monitor patients for signs of hyperkalemia like irregular heartbeats and check electrolyte levels as ordered.
