Auto Transformer Calculation Guide

This document provides calculations for an auto transformer. It determines: 1) The number of turns per volt is 3.34 based on parameters like magnetic induction, core area, and frequency. 2) The power of a normal transformer with the same core area is 78.5W. 3) The power rating of the auto transformer is 157W to account for voltage transformation from 220V to 110V. 4) The number of windings are calculated to be 735 for the 220V section and 368 for the 110V tapping. 5) The wire diameter is calculated to be 0.36mm based on the output current of 1.42A and a current density of 2.

Calculation of an Auto transformer

Number of turns per Volt

n / V = 104 / (4,44 * B * Fq * 0,9 * f)
B = magnetic induction [T or Wb/m2]
Fq = Core limb [cm2]
f = operating frequency [Hz]
n = number of turns per volt
0,9 = filling factor

For your calculation, take the following data:

B = 1,3T
Fq = 11,52 cm2
F = 50 Hz
n / V = 104 / (4,44 * 1,3 * 11,52 * 0,9 * 50) = 3,34 n / V

Power of a normal transformer:

Fq = B * P

P = (Fq / B)2

P = (11,52cm / 1,3T) = 78,5W

Power of a auto transformer for a calculate power of normal transformer:

Pauto transformer = Pnormal transformer / {1 (U2 / U1)} = 78,5W {1 - (110V / 220V)} = 157W

Calculate of the winding:

n1 = n * U1 = 3,34 n/V * 220V 735 windings (734,8 windings)
n2 = n1 * U2 / U1 = 735 * 110 / 220 368 windings (367,5 windings)
n2 = tapping of n1. In this special case it is a centre tapping.

Calculation of the wire diameter:

d = 2 * {I / ( * S)}
d = wire diameter [mm]
I = output current [A]
S = current density [A/mm]
For good using S = 2,5 A/mm
I = P / U2 = 157W / 110V = 1,42A
d = 2 * { 1,42A / ( * 2,5A/mm)} = 0,36mm
