Our cover picture is the footpath leading to St Andrews Church, Congham and the photo is courtesy of Rick Aldous, thank you Rick for sending it, it's very appropriate for the season. Deadline for submissions for the March issue is15th March. The timing for getting this issue to the printer's will be a little tight, due to how Easter falls, so early submissions will be appreciated. Not funny ha ha but an odd mix of highs and lows and contrasting emotions as we travel in our hearts with Christ on his journey to Jerusalem. There is deep personal reflection (for those of us who take Lent seriously) Then, later in the month, we feel the pain and passion of Holy week as we remembering Christ's suffering humiliation and death on the cross. And then in complete contrast again the joyful celebration of Easter day and resurrection. What's even odder is that in the midst of this journey toward and then celebrating Easter the story is broken into on the fourth Sunday of Lent (this year 6" March) as it is always kept as Mothering Sunday. A day when Mothering in all its forms is celebrated. So within the church March will bring a mixture of emotions, highs and lows — serious reflection, sadness and indeed joy. Bit like life really! Thinking about mothering - The list of characteristics associated with mothering is long and varied. We could say those who ‘mother’ us are determined, protective, nurturing, passionate, generous, sacrificial, brave, joyful, trusting and faithful and ever present even in sorrow, grieving, caring. Mothering demonstrates a love that is stronger than death. We call God 'Our Father’ — we could equally say ‘our mother’ Jesus's wept tears over the people of Jerusalem ‘as a mother weeps for her children, longing to gather them like a hen gathers her chicks.’ A'love stronger than death'is also a description of God's love for us We all yearn to be mothered don't we? Without someone to look out for our interests, to defend us, to protect us; to enable us to learn our purpose in life, without someone to model trust, faith, and joy; without someone whowill love us enough to let us go our own way; without someone to take the risk of loving us, even knowing that that love may bring them pain; without someone to stand with us in our times of greatest suffering — without someone to do those things for us, we are missing something crucial. And if we ourselves have nobody for whom we can do these things, we are also missing out. As we think about our own lives, our experiences of mothering or of being mothered; we remember with thanksgiving the people who have done those things for us. And that might well include people other than our birth mothers, for mothering is not only done by mothers — we can all do mothering! On the cross, God's love is nailed firmly to the world so as never to let it go. A truly parental love is one that would give anything and everything for the child. This is the love of God that we see on the cross, but this is also the love that we are called to have for one another and for all of God's creation. When we love like that, we make our Mothering-God visible in the world. Happy Mothering Sunday, and a Very Happy Easter. The children are delighted that Mother Nature has worked her magic again and that the bulbs they planted last Autumn have grown and soon will bloom. We were so pleased to be part of a whole Community project like this and hope that every year as the children grow, they will be reminded of the part they played in showing visitors and residents just how lucky we are to have such a beautiful place to live. | feel like the school is a bit of a growing project; the children are like the bulbs, kept inside more by the long dark nights and wet playtimes over the Winter but, as we found with the bulbs, the children are now starting to see the growth in their learning. Handwriting that just would not neaten up has begun to take shape and flow more easily from their pencil. Times tables and spellings that could not be learnt have now been locked into their memories and can be called upon in maths problem solving or whilst they write a challenging story. The nurturing surroundings with the rich nutrients fed to them by the teachers in the form of top quality lessons, engaging themes and topics, praise and feedback about how to improve... all serve to grow each child so that they can withstand the pressures of the outside elements that impact on them. The school is going to welcome a new member of staff in April who has been appointed as a permanent member of staff. Miss Amy Harvey will be joining Aldrin Class and taking the role of Deputy Headteacher to support the work of the school. She has already been sharing exciting new plans that will continue the good work already being done to grow the children both academically and socially and we are really looking forward to her starting. Of course, we all want to say thank you to Miss Linda Ecclestone who has been such a key member of our staffing team, covering the temporary vacancies and ensuring that the children in her class are loved, cared for and well taught whilst the permanent appointments are made. Wishing you all the best for a bright, fresh springtime. We raised over £300! All pennies raised were for the benefit of the children and some of the money has already gone towards lovely little tables and chairs, magnetic boards and a playhouse. This term the children attending TiddlyPotts have been learning about People Who Help Us and singing lots of new songs, a favourite being '10 Fat Sausages!’ TiddlyPotts opens 9:30 - 11:30 every Friday during term time at Pott Row Methodist Church. Grimston Parish Council News Next Meeting: Monday 7th March at 7.30 p.m. Dog/Litter Bins: Please remember Dog Bins are for walkers to dispose of their dog mess while out with their dogs. DO NOT collect the muck in your garden and put it in a dog bin. Please double bag it and put it in your Black Bin (this is acceptable). Also you must not put the muck in a Litter Bin - Bottles (glass & plastic) are best put straight in your Green bin for recycling, rather than a litter bin. Although 1916 was devastating for the nation with the 1" July being the worst day in the history of the British Army, Grimston escaped lightly with only two deaths during the whole year. Charles Eggleton died July 29" 1916 Charles was born in Middleton. His father also called Charles was a farm worker and the family — Charles and four younger sisters — moved home with each job change. They lived at Fair Green when Charles was a child, then moved to Congham where he began work as a yardman and finally settled in Pott Row. Charles changed his job and worked as a bricklayer's labourer. Charles volunteered at the very beginning of the war. Before signing on he married Alice Bunnett and they had two children in the subsequent two years. Charles joined the 1“ Norfolks. This is surprising as the 1* Battalion was essentially a battalion of “regulars”. We can only presume they were short of men and thus received volunteers. Charles arrived in France in April 1915 and had therefore been fighting for a year before his death and it is certain that he had fought around Ypres and in France. Mr and Mrs Eggleton received a letter from Charles just before he died saying that he was well. Thus it was a terrible shock to get news of his death almost immediately afterwards. Charles died of wounds and is buried in St Pierre cemetery Amiens. As Amiens was the site of a casualty clearing station he may well have been on his way to treatment or even being treated when he died. As Charles was Mr and Mrs Eggleton's only son his loss evoked deep sympathy in the village and the rector made reference to it on the following Sunday morning. continued on Page 28 Village Link | 27 Stephen Rudd died 27" April 1916 Stephen Rudd was born in Grimston the son of Mary Ann and Samuel. He was one of seven children. Samuel worked as a bricklayer but by 1901 two of his sons, Fred aged 17 and Stephen just 14, were working on a farm as cattlemen. In 1905, aged 19 Stephen signed an attestation to join the 3° Battalion of the Norfolks. He became part of the special reserves in which he would have received six months initial training and three or four weeks training each year thereafter. The men of the special reserve knew they would be called up immediately should a war break out and they were mobilised in August 1914. Stephen joined the 2” Norfolks and arrived in Mesopotamia on 15" November 1914. Having captured Basra in 1914 and won a long hard battle at Shut the division was ordered to advance to Bagdad or Kut. At the end of 1915 the force was besieged in Kut for four months and surrendered to the Turks on 29" April 1916 when over 13,000 men were taken prisoner. Stephen had died just two days before. Although listed as killed in action Stephen probably died of sickness rather than wounds as fever and cholera were rife in the starving garrison. Stephen is buried in Kut Cemetery in present day Iraq. As always, please get in touch if you are related to either Charles or Stephen We have a picture of Charles but it is from the Lynn News so not the best quality, lan and Steph Hall 01485 600470 Roydon Parish Council Meetings The Parish Council meeting dates for 2016 7.0pm at Pott Row Village Hall 7th January 3rd March. 12th May. 7th July. 8th September. 3rd November. This tells the story of a Baptist minister in Texas called Don Piper. He was involved in a horrific car accident driving home from a conference. He was pronounced dead by the paramedics but woke up 90 minutes later as another minister, who had climbed inside the mashed up car, was praying for him. Months later Don started to tell family and friends about his 90 minutes in heaven, and from his hospital bed wished he was back there. In many ways, a reassuring story for modern day doubting Thomases. No wonder 4 million copies have been sold! But then, | reflect as Easter Day draws near. There are plenty of situations when you can know something but still not believe that truth applies to you. As a youngster, take your feet off the bottom of the pool and you can float. Ride a plane with a parachute on your back and you can jump out and land safely. Providing you pull the string! Be in a hospital bed, accept an anaesthetic and you will wake up. Each situation calls for a trusting heart. Why then do so many people across the world hearing Christians sing, “Jesus Christ is risen to-day, Hallelujah” on Easter Day take no action with a trusting heart and say with Thomas of old, “My Lord and My God!”? In daily life, you have to trust your teacher if you are to inherit a myriad of skills. But sadly many will enjoy the hymn but miss the point. We have been so radicalised to believe the way through life is self-reliance, and wallow in the luxury of selfishness at every turn, that to commit to another is thought to be the last thing to do, rather than the first. Many since Don Piper started telling his story across the world will dismiss it and miss the point that there is life after death. Many since the Christian church has been greeting one another on Easter Day with the simple words “Christ is risen!” and the glad affirmation “He is risen indeed” have been doing the same. It is not too hard to see who is the looser. And all for the lack of a trusting heart and a sincere act of commitment to inherit what nothing and no-one can take away from Village Link | 31 Let your dog have a vacation too!
