THE VILLAGE LINK
GRIMSTON, POTT ROW, ROYDON & CONGHAM
Hello Everyone,
Easter will be with us soon, and Mother’s day too, | always knew it as Mothering
Sunday and as children we gathered wild flowers (probably not allowed to do that
nowadays) to give to our Mothers.
Our cover picture is the footpath leading to St Andrews Church, Congham and the
photo is courtesy of Rick Aldous, thank you Rick for sending it, it's very
appropriate for the season.
Deadline for submissions for the March issue is15th March.
The timing for getting this issue to the printer's will be a little tight, due to
how Easter falls, so early submissions will be appreciated.

Village Link | 3March is a funny month!
Not funny ha ha but an odd mix of highs and lows and contrasting emotions as we
travel in our hearts with Christ on his journey to Jerusalem.
There is deep personal reflection (for those of us who take Lent seriously)
Then, later in the month, we feel the pain and passion of Holy week as we
remembering Christ's suffering humiliation and death on the cross.
And then in complete contrast again the joyful celebration of Easter day and
resurrection.
What's even odder is that in the midst of this journey toward and then celebrating
Easter the story is broken into on the fourth Sunday of Lent (this year 6" March) as it
is always kept as Mothering Sunday. A day when Mothering in all its forms is
celebrated.
So within the church March will bring a mixture of emotions, highs and lows — serious
reflection, sadness and indeed joy. Bit like life really!
Thinking about mothering - The list of characteristics associated with mothering is
long and varied. We could say those who ‘mother’ us are determined, protective,
nurturing, passionate, generous, sacrificial, brave, joyful, trusting and faithful and
ever present even in sorrow, grieving, caring. Mothering demonstrates a love that is
stronger than death.
We call God 'Our Father’ — we could equally say ‘our mother’ Jesus's wept tears over
the people of Jerusalem ‘as a mother weeps for her children, longing to gather them
like a hen gathers her chicks.’
A'love stronger than death'is also a description of God's love for us
We all yearn to be mothered don't we? Without someone to look out for our interests,
to defend us, to protect us; to enable us to learn our purpose in life, without someone
to model trust, faith, and joy; without someone whowill love us enough to let us go our
own way; without someone to take the risk of loving us, even knowing that that love
may bring them pain; without someone to stand with us in our times of greatest
suffering — without someone to do those things for us, we are missing something
crucial. And if we ourselves have nobody for whom we can do these things, we are
also missing out.
As we think about our own lives, our experiences of mothering or of being mothered;
we remember with thanksgiving the people who have done those things for us. And
that might well include people other than our birth mothers, for mothering is not only
done by mothers — we can all do mothering!
On the cross, God's love is nailed firmly to the world so as never to let it go. A truly
parental love is one that would give anything and everything for the child. This is the
love of God that we see on the cross, but this is also the love that we are called to
have for one another and for all of God's creation. When we love like that, we make
our Mothering-God visible in the world.
Happy Mothering Sunday, and a Very Happy Easter.
Much Love
Revd Jane

Holly Meadows School
| wonder if anyone has noticed the daffodils in the village that have started to
push their way out of the ground to brighten our surroundings. The children are
delighted that Mother Nature has worked her magic again and that the bulbs
they planted last Autumn have grown and soon will bloom. We were so
pleased to be part of a whole Community project like this and hope that every
year as the children grow, they will be reminded of the part they played in
showing visitors and residents just how lucky we are to have such a beautiful
place to live.
| feel like the school is a bit of a growing project; the children are like the bulbs,
kept inside more by the long dark nights and wet playtimes over the Winter but,
as we found with the bulbs, the children are now starting to see the growth in
their learning. Handwriting that just would not neaten up has begun to take
shape and flow more easily from their pencil. Times tables and spellings that
could not be learnt have now been locked into their memories and can be
called upon in maths problem solving or whilst they write a challenging story.
The nurturing surroundings with the rich nutrients fed to them by the teachers
in the form of top quality lessons, engaging themes and topics, praise and
feedback about how to improve... all serve to grow each child so that they can
withstand the pressures of the outside elements that impact on them.
The school is going to welcome a new member of staff in April who has been
appointed as a permanent member of staff. Miss Amy Harvey will be joining
Aldrin Class and taking the role of Deputy Headteacher to support the work of
the school. She has already been sharing exciting new plans that will continue
the good work already being done to grow the children both academically and
socially and we are really looking forward to her starting. Of course, we all
want to say thank you to Miss Linda Ecclestone who has been such a key
member of our staffing team, covering the temporary vacancies and ensuring
that the children in her class are loved, cared for and well taught whilst the
permanent appointments are made.
Wishing you all the best for a bright, fresh springtime.
Rachael Williams, Headteacher, Holly Meadows School

Unfortunately, | was unsuccessful in the recent public elections for governors at
QEH so | am unable to continue with articles for the magazine, at least until |

views and experiences, please consider joining the Trust. It is free and doesn't
involve any commitment on your part but members are eligible to vote for those
they wish to represent their interests at the next election. You can join on-line at
[Link] or phone 01553 613142. The QE is a rural district general
hospital and will never offer the specialist services we get further afield, but it is
only by using the services that are available now, that the hospital can sustain its
income and plan development for the future. Hospital income comes from the
number of patients seen. Looking at the title of this article in another way, QEH
does, or should, matter to everyone in West Norfolk.
Latest News
. Public event on Arthritis on May 12” at 18.30 at QEH.
. Waterlily Birth Centre is proving very popular with local mums to be. 25%
of births have taken place here since its opening in December. Not a doctor in
sight unless you really need one!
. Breast Unit moves to its new location near the MacMillan unit this month.
All breast services will be in one place - screening, clinics, medical staff and
admin.
. Car Park - improvements are ongoing. New machines are being installed
and will eventually take cards. Prices are changing. Yes, it may cost more to
park for 3 hours but less for 2, 4 and 5 hours.
. Wind turbine should be up in February and commissioned in March. This
will reduce the hospital's energy costs without cost — apart from the recent
disruption in the car park.
. Site wide Wi-fi will be available from July.
. All wards are undergoing refurbishment in turn, with LED lighting, beds
serviced and new mattresses
. The fracture clinic has been issued with pagers. Once a patient has
booked in, they are issued with a pager and then can go for a drink or walk,
knowing they will be called when they are to be seen. This has been funded
by the League of Friends.
. Refurbishment of operating theatres by November
. Fold-down seats on corridors to provide respite from a long walk to some
clinical areas.
| hope you will notice and approve of the changes taking place. The hospital faces
a huge challenge with finance but is focusing on improving the care and safety of
patients as a priority.
The next Governors’ Council meeting is on Tuesday Sth April at 4.00pm; in the
Conference room at the QEH. Members of the public are warmly welcomed.
Please phone 01553 613142 if you wish to attend.

Greengfingers - February
The meeting on February 9” saw the beginning of our year. An interesting and
inviting programme was handed out to paid up members, which included talks,
visits, The Spring Show and Supper, a social evening and the Annual Horticultural
Show.
Members were invited to sign up for the Fish & Chip Supper on April 12" and
asked to pay by the March meeting.
The Annual Show Schedule was ready and handed out to attending members.
Saturday May 28": A Plant and Cake Sale is to be held from 10 am to 1pm in the
Village Hall. Members were asked to start collecting plants for sale. Money
raised goes towards good speakers.
Members and visitors filled the hall to hear Barry Gayton from “Desert World”
speak with unbounded enthusiasm on tender cacti and succulents. He showed us
only a fraction of this plant family which includes 900,000 recorded species.
Barry sowed his first packet of seeds at seven years of age and now has an
extensive collection of plants about which he lectures and broadcasts on radio.
Reasonably priced plants were available at the end of his talk.
Plant of the month winners were:
1" Margaret Gladman, 2” Kath Evison, 3° Mary Roper.
The next meeting is on March 8", when Gillian Gerrard's talk will be on
composting. Visitors are always welcome.
KING'S LYNN HOSPITAL LEAGUE
OF FRIENDS
Very sincere thanks to all who contributed to the Annual Christmas Appeal for the

Once again, due to your generosity, the amount collected has increased and we
have achieved the magnificent sum of £1708.35.
As ever, a huge thank you to all the collectors and also to those delivering the
Village Link and the envelopes as well.
Ata later date | will publish a list of just a few of the items bought for the QEH by
the League of Friends, because, although all the collectors do carry a list of these,
not many people ask to see it.

HAY FEVER
Tiddlypotts
The hay fever season will start soon, so be prepared.
Thank you to everyone that supported our Winter Fair back at the end of
November 2015, it was lovely to see so many people from the community
getting in to the festive spirit and helping us raise some much needed funds!
We raised over £300! All pennies raised were for the benefit of the children and
some of the money has already gone towards lovely little tables and chairs,
magnetic boards and a playhouse. This term the children attending TiddlyPotts
have been learning about People Who Help Us and singing lots of new songs, a
favourite being '10 Fat Sausages!’
TiddlyPotts opens 9:30 - 11:30 every Friday during term time at Pott Row
Methodist Church. If you haven't been before, please pop down and see us for a
taster session (£1.50 per child, 50p for additional children). We run an allocated
space system which Emma or Dionne will be happy to discuss with you.
Best Wishes
Emma & Dionne - Playgroup Leaders
Order your repeat prescriptions

do not need to make an appointment to obtain further supplies. Written
repeat prescription requests should be sent to the dispensary.
Owls

wasn't able to attend because he was in hospital, but he is home and recovering costs substantially more when bought over-the-counter than they cost
and hopes to be with us for our next meet-up which is at "The Carpenter's Arms" on prescription.
on the A47 on Mar 16th at midday. April meeting is scheduled for April 13th at

We hold all the families in our prayers and thoughts
Some of the older Gayton residents may remember Maurice Fillenham whose
parents lived in Lynn Road opposite the Methodist Chapel Sidney (Maurice's
father) was the village postman. Maurice came back to Gayton for a while when
his mother, Florence, was ill and a couple of years ago came back for a short
visit. Sadly he died in a Nursing Home in Frimley Green earlier this month aged
90. His wife, Phyllis and one son predeceased him. The funeral was held at East
Hampstead Crematorium on the 29th February.

Thanks to all who have lent a willing hand and helped keep our church clean , in
spite of plaster dust and roof repairs. The more people that volunteer, the less
there is to do. So if there is anyone out there who would like to polish the pews
and their halo at the same time, please contact me, Judith Gough, on 01485 609
217 or goughpj@[Link]. It only involves a vacuum about once every 2-3
months....and an occasional Saturday for an hour max. If a joint big cleanup is
needed.
Thanks, Judith Gough

dog mess while out with their dogs. DO NOT collect the muck in your garden and
put it in a dog bin. Please double bag it and put it in your Black Bin (this is
acceptable). Also you must not put the muck in a Litter Bin - Bottles (glass &
plastic) are best put straight in your Green bin for recycling, rather than a litter
bin.

1916- A Fortunate Year for Grimston
Conti
ing the story of the men who lost their lives in Ww1
1915 had been a sad year for the villages with eight men killed three of whom
were regulars — men who had joined the army before war commenced.
Although 1916 was devastating for the nation with the 1" July being the worst
day in the history of the British Army, Grimston escaped lightly with only two
deaths during the whole year.
Charles Eggleton died July 29" 1916
Charles was born in Middleton. His father also called Charles was a farm
worker and the family — Charles and four younger sisters — moved home with
each job change. They lived at Fair Green when Charles was a child, then
moved to Congham where he began work as a yardman and finally settled in
Pott Row. Charles changed his job and worked as a bricklayer's labourer.
Charles volunteered at the very beginning of the war. Before signing on he
married Alice Bunnett and they had two children in the subsequent two years.
Charles joined the 1“ Norfolks. This is surprising as the 1* Battalion was
essentially a battalion of “regulars”. We can only presume they were short of
men and thus received volunteers. Charles arrived in France in April 1915 and
had therefore been fighting for a year before his death and it is certain that he
had fought around Ypres and in France. Mr and Mrs Eggleton received a
letter from Charles just before he died saying that he was well. Thus it was a
terrible shock to get news of his death almost immediately afterwards. Charles
died of wounds and is buried in St Pierre cemetery Amiens. As Amiens was
the site of a casualty clearing station he may well have been on his way to
treatment or even being treated when he died. As Charles was Mr and Mrs
Eggleton's only son his loss evoked deep sympathy in the village and the
rector made reference to it on the following Sunday morning.

Village Link | 27Stephen Rudd died 27" April 1916
Stephen Rudd was born in Grimston the son of Mary Ann and Samuel. He was
one of seven children. Samuel worked as a bricklayer but by 1901 two of his
sons, Fred aged 17 and Stephen just 14, were working on a farm as cattlemen.
In 1905, aged 19 Stephen signed an attestation to join the 3° Battalion of the
Norfolks. He became part of the special reserves in which he would have
received six months initial training and three or four weeks training each year
thereafter. The men of the special reserve knew they would be called up
immediately should a war break out and they were mobilised in August 1914.
Stephen joined the 2” Norfolks and arrived in Mesopotamia on 15" November
1914. Having captured Basra in 1914 and won a long hard battle at Shut the
division was ordered to advance to Bagdad or Kut. At the end of 1915 the force
was besieged in Kut for four months and surrendered to the Turks on 29" April
1916 when over 13,000 men were taken prisoner. Stephen had died just two
days before. Although listed as killed in action Stephen probably died of
sickness rather than wounds as fever and cholera were rife in the starving
garrison. Stephen is buried in Kut Cemetery in present day Iraq.
As always, please get in touch if you are related to either Charles or Stephen
We have a picture of Charles but it is from the Lynn News so not the best
quality,

The Last Word.
| came across a book with the interesting title “90 Minutes in Heaven”. This tells
the story of a Baptist minister in Texas called Don Piper. He was involved in a
horrific car accident driving home from a conference. He was pronounced dead
by the paramedics but woke up 90 minutes later as another minister, who had
climbed inside the mashed up car, was praying for him.
Months later Don started to tell family and friends about his 90 minutes in heaven,
and from his hospital bed wished he was back there. In many ways, a reassuring
story for modern day doubting Thomases. No wonder 4 million copies have been
sold!
But then, | reflect as Easter Day draws near. There are plenty of situations when
you can know something but still not believe that truth applies to you. As a
youngster, take your feet off the bottom of the pool and you can float. Ride a
plane with a parachute on your back and you can jump out and land safely.
Providing you pull the string! Be in a hospital bed, accept an anaesthetic and you
will wake up. Each situation calls for a trusting heart.
Why then do so many people across the world hearing Christians sing, “Jesus
Christ is risen to-day, Hallelujah” on Easter Day take no action with a trusting
heart and say with Thomas of old, “My Lord and My God!”? In daily life, you have
to trust your teacher if you are to inherit a myriad of skills. But sadly many will
enjoy the hymn but miss the point. We have been so radicalised to believe the
way through life is self-reliance, and wallow in the luxury of selfishness at every
turn, that to commit to another is thought to be the last thing to do, rather than the
first.
Many since Don Piper started telling his story across the world will dismiss it and
miss the point that there is life after death. Many since the Christian church has
been greeting one another on Easter Day with the simple words “Christ is risen!”
and the glad affirmation “He is risen indeed” have been doing the same. It is not
too hard to see who is the looser. And all for the lack of a trusting heart and a
sincere act of commitment to inherit what nothing and no-one can take away from
