Understanding of Matter
Your Name: _______________________________________
Learning Contract
This learning contract covers your investigation of matter, as well as four products you
will create. You will be able to do some of your work independently and some of your
work with a partner. Check off each box once you have completed and activity.
Required Activities
1) Complete Pretest:
Complete matter pretest on Quia website.
2) Review vocabulary terms for physical and chemical properties:
Review the terms using the flashcards on Quia, then complete at least one of
the activities: concentration, matching, word search or Hangman.
Take a screenshot of your completed activity or activities and post it on the
class Edmodo site as a message to the teacher.
3) Working with a partner, read the textbook, Chapter 1, Section 1: Describing
Matter, and Chapter 1, Section 3: Changes in Matter to understand properties
and changes in matter.
Read the sections and take 3 column notes (see model below) over the major
ideas in sections 1 and 3.
Discuss the important ideas from each section with your partner and compare
notes to make sure you each have complete and correct notes.
Example: 3 column notes:

4) Adopt-An-Element
Complete Adopt an Element information sheet:
You may use a variety of reference sources. Possible ideas are your
textbook, online resources/internet sites, science catalogs, etc. Information
must be written neatly, or completed on the Google Doc. You will need to
provide a list of sources on the back of your information sheet or at the end
of your Google Doc. A minimum of two sources are required.
Create an advertisement for your element:
The advertisement must include the elements name, symbol, atomic
number, atomic mass, cost, physical and chemical properties, reactivity, and
an advertising slogan that describes one or more of its important uses.
Advertisements must be neat, colorful, and contain all the information listed
above. You may add pictures that relate to your advertisement theme,
including uses for your element and substances that contain your element.
You can create your ad in Word, Publisher, Google Docs, Google Drawing,
or any another word processing program.
Attach your advertisement to this contract, or share the link to your digital
advertisement by posting a link on the class Edmodo site in the discussion
forum.
5) Complete Matter Post Test
Complete post test over matter, properties of matter and changes in matter
