Understanding Direct Variation Equations

Direct variation occurs when two quantities vary proportionally such that one quantity increases as the other increases by a constant factor. The direct variation equation is y = kx, where k is the constant of variation. To determine if data shows direct variation, set up proportions using corresponding x and y values and check if the proportions are equal. Equations of direct variation can be found by setting up the direct variation equation with known x and y values and solving for the constant k.

11-5 Direct Variation

By: ME
Direct Variation
• Direct Variation is when two variable
quantities are related proportionally by a
constant positive ratio.
• EX.
• 8=k
• 16 = 2k
• 24 = 3k
• And so on…..
Direct Variation
• The equation for direct variation is

• K is the constant ratio

Direct Variation
• Determine if the data shows direct variation.

• To find if there is a direct variation choose two sets of data

and set up a proportion. If they are equal it is a direct
variation, if they are not equal, it is not a direct variation.
Direct Variation
• Determine if the data shows direct variation.

Finding Equations of Direct Variation
• Find each equation of direct variation, given
that y varies directly with x.
• EX A. y is 52 when x is 4
• y = kx
• 52 = k · 4
• ÷4 ÷4
• 13 = k
• y = 13x
Finding Equations of Direct Variation
• Find each equation of direct variation, given
that y varies directly with x.
• EX A. x is 10 when y is 15
• y = kx
• 15 = k · 10
• ÷10 ÷10
• 3/2 = k
• y = 3/2x
