Learning Alive Suite (PC Version) by Kaplan Early Learning Company is a wonderful program
that is designed to help students grades preK-3rd grade become proficient in math, reading and
literacy by augmenting reality and bringing lessons to life. (300 characters)
Classroom
I try to extend the joy of learning and inspire students to take learning beyond the classroom.
My first grade class consists of 25 eager to learn students. What we want is to see the child in
pursuit of knowledge, and not knowledge in pursuit of the child - George Bernard Shaw
Students
My 25 students are a group of typical 6 year olds that are busy with the desire to learn, explore
and discover. Our school is situated in a mostly suburban area and many students live in rural
parts of the district. As a result, many students have not experienced much beyond the scope of
their homes and city that we live. More specifically, my class has had significant behavioral
problems with 20% of students diagnosed with ADD / ADHD. In addition, two students have a
diagnosed learning disability and three students are repeating first grade. Students arrived on the
first day not knowing all the letters, sounds, numbers, etc. However they did enter my classroom
on the first day greeted with love and encouragement. Knowing how diverse my students
learning styles are is why Learning Alive would be so vital in my classroom. Learning Alive will
bring learning to life, it will add a heartbeat to the letters, sounds and numbers that my first grade
students are faced with on a daily basis.
Project Description (1000 characters)
Using the Letters Alive program I will be better able meet my students where they are at in their
learning. It can be difficult to find creative ways to differentiate learning for students but this
would help me work with struggling students, giving them additional practice in learning letters
and sounds. Through augmented reality, the program brings to life 26 alphabet cards. This
program is even able to respond to questions that students have! For struggling students and
unenthusiastic learners this is a great way to increase engagement / create memorable learning
experiences. In my classroom I plan to implement the program into group settings including
whole group, small group, and independent work. In a whole group setting I will be able to
introduce letters and sounds. For visual learners this provides another way for students to process
information. In small group and independent work, students will have an intimate experience
with the program.
Conclusion
This will make a huge difference to many of students who will learn and use tech. It is my desire
to provide them with opportunities to expand their knowledge that they may not have access to at
home. During first grade, it is vital for students to make grow exponentially in literacy skills.
Thus, it is a pivotal time to instill a joy of learning that will remain with students for the rest of
their lives.
