Task 2
Writing
Task 2 Writing
Objective
To develop awareness of different genres and forms of writing for children and consider
methods used for giving feedback on childrens writing.
Procedure
1, Collect 4 samples of childrens writing. Make
sure to remove the childs name from the sample.
Try to find samples from different grade levels if
possible. If not just choose samples from
different levels in your class.
2. Notice any forms/genres of writing used in your classroom.
Most of these samples the students were in Letters and spaces stage and
Conventional writing and spelling. First, in letters and space stage the
beginning writers practice their craft, and learn many concepts about print.
As I noticed from these samples I found that student spell high frequency
words correctly for example, my, I, etc. Also they begin to write words with the
way they sound. For example, one of these samples the student wrote the
word car with (K) instead of (C). Consequently, in next process of developing
the writing the student will be able to distinguish the rule of writing. On the
other hand, some samples of writing were in Conventional writing and spelling
which that means the writer spell most words correctly, with a reliance on
phonics knowledge to spell longer words. For example, they didnt ask the
teacher about the spelling of long word from the
teacher so they can spell long work like; I-pad,
strawberry, watermelon, etc.

Talk to your teacher and ask the following questions:
What writing genres does she try to expose children to
during the year?
Is there a whole school plan for writing development?
Is there a policy for giving feedback to children on their writing?
Does the school have any criteria for assessing childrens writing?
How does she give feedback to her students?
Before the Observation
Research Writing Forms or Writing Genres and create a table with 20 different writing genres
and writing forms you might see during teaching practice.

During Teaching Practice
1. Collect the writing samples and try to find different samples from 3
different grade levels so you can get a picture of how childrens writing
evolves.
2. Keep a record of any different forms or genres used in your classroom.
3. Interview your teacher and record her answers.
These two samples of writing talked from Grade 3.
After the Observation
Summarize the teachers answers.
Complete the observation table.
Reflection
Identify one writing sample and explain the stage of writing you think the student has reached.
This sample showed that the
student is in Fluency
Conventional spelling
stage because he used
resembles adult writing. for
example, he wrote I love my
cloth so much so they
organized his idea and had
meaning for his written
language.
Also, he was aware about
concepts of print. For
instance, he put folly stop,
comma, and capital letter
when he wrote the title and
start the first of sentence.
Teacher Interview
What writing genres
does she try to expose
children to during the
year?
First, writing process is a powerful tool so in grade one the teacher
makes sure that the students are increasing all aspects of language.
So the child can learn vocabulary about seasons, clothes, colors, etc,
develop hand writing, develop phonological awareness, and aware
about concepts of print.
Is there a whole school
plan
for
writing
development?
Yes, the supervisor of English subject made with teachers a plan for
year, month, and week. All teacher her responsible to develop the
children level in writing through giving extra activity out of the class
time for example, making dictation, provide them with print rich
environment, setting with them in class practice writing, and give fun
home works.
Is there a policy for
giving
feedback
to
children
on
their
writing?
Yes, I tried every day to contact with the student parents due to give
them feedback about their kid writing. This step helps parents to
assist their kid and make collaboration between teachers and parent.
In classroom, I gave visual feedback because that captured the
student attention and make them love correct their mistake in writing.
Does the school have
any
criteria
for
assessing
childrens
writing?
How does
feedback
students?
she
to
give
her
Yes, I had a check list for the students level in
writing. In the school, we assess the student
writing through making exam for children in their
level.
For example, if some students emerged in writing
and have full mark in exam I make another
challenging exam for them to develop their
process of developing writing. So monthly, I made
treatment plans for low-level, medium level, and
high level.
I gave verbally feedback with good intonation to
show that they did a good work. Also, I told the
student what mistakes he fall in so next time
avoid it and correct his error by his own.
Sometimes, I give written feedback for students
who are emerged in reading so they can read the
feedback and feel proud about their effort about
their work.
In grade one, I noticed two forms of writing in the classroom, so we will mention them
and write the description about each of them.
