Now that children have been introduced to the theme of family, they will read
about families all over the world and begin to talk about their family members
and the things they enjoy doing together.
A continuation of a
previous
lesson/activity
It is important for children to know and be able to talk about what each of their
family members do and the ways they engage with one another. As part of an
anti-bias curriculum, children should also begin to understand that different
families have different traditions, and they all are valuable and need to be
respected.
12 minutes whole group

Anticipatory Set (Connection/Motivation) To activate previous knowledge, we will
start by singing the finger play song Finger Family. Then, we will review what
we have covered so far about families. Children, know that we have learned
about what a family is and who our family members are, we are going to read
about families from many places in the world. Show them a map or globe so
they can have a better idea of what the world means.
Instruction/Mini Lesson Read the book Our Global Community- Families. Make
sure to talk about book elements before reading. As we read, we will pause to

look at the beautiful photographs, talk about them, and make text-to-self or texttotext connections and predictions. After reading, the teacher will ask children
What are some things families can do together? Children can answer using
examples from the book, and examples from their own lives. After that, children
will be encouraged to note that although families look very different from each
other and practice different traditions, we also have many things in common,
especially the fact that family members love and care for one another!
Independent Practice In small groups, children will then be encouraged to dress
up and use props from the dramatic center to role-play some of the activities
they listed after reading the books. Teacher will scaffold language and listen for
evidence of learning and language development.
Closure (sharing/reflection, next steps) We will come together as a whole group
and talk about what we learned and what we enjoyed the most about the activity
