- The underground temperature below the frost line remains at a moderate and constant temperature, around 52 degrees Fahrenheit. - A geothermal system uses this constant underground temperature by circulating water through pipes buried below the frost line to heat or cool a home. In winter, the pipes absorb natural heat from the earth and transfer it to the home. In summer, the process is reversed to remove heat from the home. - Current geothermal technology provides a low-cost, maintenance-free system to efficiently heat and cool homes using the earth's natural temperature. Underground loops can be installed horizontally, vertically, or in ponds/lakes depending on site conditions.
