Introduction
Now a days the wireless technologies are more use in mobiles
and are widely evolving. Some of the technologies now used in
mobiles are Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and wibree. These technologies
are widely used to connect the large devices like mobile phones
or personal computers. No other existing wireless technologies
will connect with small button cell battery.

Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi or Wireless Fidelity allows
you to connect to the Internet from your couch at home, a bed in
a hotel room or at a conference room at work without wires.
A Wi-Fi enabled device such as a
personal computer, video game console, Smart phone or digital
audio player can connect to the Internet when within range of a
wireless network connected to the Internet.
Wi-Fi technology builds on IEEE 802.11 standards.
It operates in the frequency band of 2.4 GHz.
Maximum data rate is 11 Mbps.
Consists of the following components:
Station
A station is a network node that is equipped
with a wireless network device.
Wireless Access Points
A wireless access point is a wireless network node
that acts as a bridge between station and a wired network.
Operational modes
1. Ad hoc mode
2. Infrastructure mode.
AD HOC MODE:
In ad hoc mode, also known as peer-to-peer mode, wireless
clients communicate directly with each other (without the
use of a wireless AP).
INFRA STRUCTURE MODE:
In infrastructure mode, there is at least
one wireless AP and one wireless client. The wireless client
uses the wireless AP to access the resources of a wired
network.
ADVANTAGES
It’s flexible: With a wireless network you and your staff can have
uninterrupted access to people, information and tools
as you and they move through the workplace with
your mobile PC.
It’s responsive: As you change your business operations your
wireless network can change with you.
It’s customized: Your wireless network can be configured the
way you want it.-even combined with your
current wired network.
It’s fast: From 11 to 54 Mbps throughput and advanced roaming
capabilities provide reliable access to e-mail, the Internet,
file sharing and other network resources away from the
desk.
It’s cost-effective: Expand and extend your existing network
by simply adding more adapters and
access points
It’s secure: Current standards utilizes 64- and 128-bit wired
equivalent privacy(WEP) encryption and
help
guard the network from intruders and protect data
in transit. Add in technology and you have
increased WLAN protection important for mission
critical data
LIMITATIONS
• It has a limited bandwidth of about 83.5 MHz
• Frequency spectrum used by IEEE 802.11b is shared by
many other systems like microwave ovens,
cordless phones etc. This frequency sharing causes
interference problem.
•Security techniques are not reliable yet.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth technology is a wireless short-range communication
system introduced to replace the cables connecting portable
electronic devices.
Bluetooth was named after a 10th century king
Harald Bluetooth, king of Denmark & Norway
Bluetooth is a standard and communication Protocol primarily
designed for low power consumption.
Communication within short range is possible via Bluetooth.
It communicates on a frequency between 2.402GHz to 2.480 GHz .
It can connect up to eight devices simultaneously.
Security
Devices can easily grab radio waves out of the air, so people
who send sensitive information over a wireless connection
need to take precautions to make sure those signals aren't
Intercepted.
In almost all cases, Bluetooth users can establish "trusted
devices" that can exchange data without asking permission.
When any other device tries to establish a connection to
the user's gadget, the user has to decide to allow it.
Advantages
Bluetooth helps to bring with it the promise of freedom from
the cables and simplicity in networking.
It can go through obstacles near to it.
Provides ranges of up to 100 meters.
Bluetooth is also low power and low processing with
an overhead protocol.
Disadvantages
Infrared can have data rates of up to 4 MBps, which provides
very fast rates for data transfer, while Bluetooth only offers
1 Mbps.
The greater range and radio frequency of Bluetooth make
it much more open to interception and attack.
Wibree
Wibree is a digital radio
technology (intended to become an open standard of wireless
communications) designed for ultra low power consumption
(button cell batteries) within a short range (10 meters / 30 ft)
based around low-cost transceiver microchips in each device.
Nokia introduced this new technology WIBREE.
Use of Wibree
Wireless keyboards
Wireless mice
Electronic toys
Medical devices, possibly implanted
Watches
Cell phones
Sports sensors
Connectivity
IEEE 802.15.4 standard
wireless standard IEEE 802.11
The 2.4 GHz frequency connectivity technology, offering low
power usage & maximum micro connectivity.
Wibree technology complements close range communication of
with Bluetooth like performance within 0-10 m range and data.
rate 1 Mbps
Implementation
Wibree is of two types
Wibree Stand-alone chip
Wibree Bluetooth dual- mode chip
Wibree stand alone chip
Used with applications which require extremely low power
consumption, small size, low cost and where only small
quantities of data are transferred.
An ideal solution for small devices (like heart-rate monitors) that
use only short data messages and must have
long battery life
e.g. watches, sports and wellness devices and human interface
devices (HID) such as wireless keyboards.
Bluetooth dual mode chip
•Designed for Bluetooth devices
•Integrating with Bluetooth chip using current Bluetooth
peripherals
• Additional tiny power cell( e.g. cr2430)
•Mainly integrated in mobile devices & the same category
devices
• Share peripherals like antenna
e.g. mobile phones and personal computers.
Where we can find WIBREE
Advantages
•Ultra-low power consumption
•Long battery life
•Use same frequency of Bluetooth (2.4GHz)
•Small chip size
•10 times more energy efficient than Bluetooth
•Inexpensive implementation
•Easily integrated with Bluetooth solutions
Disadvantages
•Data transmission is very slow, i.e. only 1Megabit per second
•Cannot be used in high bandwidth required applications
