Kundur Two-Area System Analysis

This document provides instructions for exercises on transient stability simulation using examples from Kundur's book. The first exercise uses a single-machine infinite-bus system (SMIB) to investigate the impact of an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and power system stabilizer (PSS) on transient stability. The second exercise uses a two-area system to determine a transfer limit, test fault clearing times, and explore ways to increase the limit through governor models, load shedding, and generator tripping.

Power System Stability Minicourse IEA

Exercise 2

Transient stability
SMIB

Use the SMIB system from Kundur Example 13.1 on pp 843.

Construct a simple (Lyapunov) energy function indicator for on-line use during simulation.

Do Kundur Example 13.2 on pp 864 to investigate the impact on AVR and PSS on transient
stability. Note the following:

• Saturation representation is different in EUROSTAG. Use md=0.128 and nd=5.78.

• Use Air gap line to define the d-axis mutual inductance p.u.

• Create a macroblock ST1A with excitation system, AVR and PSS as in Figure 13.12
p.855.

• Set the minimum time step to 0.0001 s.

• Use clearing times 0.06 and 0.09 s instead of 0.07 and 0.10 s.

• To save time, you can abort the simulation as soon as you have detected loss of
synchronism.

Two-area system

Two-area system from Kundur pp. 813.

Three-phase fault with 0.01 p.u. fault resistance at 1 % from B7 towards B8. Open line after
0.07 s. Try fault clearing time 1 s and add reclosing at 0.5 s.

Determine a transfer limit and find one or two realistic ways to increase it.

Add a Generic governor (and turbine model?) to generators G1 and G3. Check if it possible to
simulate separation of the system into two islands.

Try improving generation-load balance through load shedding and generator tripping in the
.seq file.
