UMMC Nursing Grand Rounds Overview

The Nursing Grand Rounds were originally planned by the Nursing Research Council at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. The first rounds were held on March 28, 2006 and have since evolved into monthly one-hour sessions open to all clinical staff. The goals of the rounds are to provide opportunities for nurses to expand their clinical knowledge from peers, acknowledge nursing expertise, present case studies on diagnoses and their management, use as a teaching tool, and decrease staff isolation. The focus of the rounds includes presentations on research studies, practice problems, case studies, best practices, and literature reviews on selected themes.

Nursing Grand Rounds at University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, Maryland

Nursing Grand Rounds were originally planned by the Nursing Research Council and interest in
such presentations was subsequently supported by the Staff Nurse Council at the University of
Maryland Medical Center. UMMC first Nursing Grand Rounds was held on March 28, 2006.
Since then, these Rounds have evolved into monthly one hour sessions open to all clinical staff.

The Nursing Research Committee reviewed the existing literature on nursing grand rounds and
agreed that UMMC Nursing Grand Rounds would provide experiences that could meet the
following goals:

The goals of Nursing Grand Rounds are:

a. Provide opportunities for nurses to learn or expand their clinical knowledge base of
practice from experienced peers;
b. Acknowledge and recognize nursing expertise in our staff;
c. Present case studies on selected diagnoses describing “here's how we managed--and what
we learned from the experience”;
d. Use as a teaching tool to help students and staff gain clinical competence and become
more proficient in nursing processes; and
e. Decrease staff isolation and promoting professional development.

Focus of the grand rounds:

• Presentation of research studies, practice problems, barriers, issues, and/or


methodologies;
• Case studies of selected diagnosis;
• Best practices on selected interventions or care practices
• Research literature review of selected themes
