Children living in homes that use coal for indoor cooking and heating tend to be shorter than children living in homes using other fuel sources. A study of over 1,000 infants in the Czech Republic found that boys in coal-burning households were 1.34 cm shorter and girls were 1.3 cm shorter. Combined exposure to coal use and cigarette smoke was linked to even greater reductions in height. Combustion of coal increases levels of toxins like particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and formaldehyde, similar to those found in cigarette smoke. The findings highlight the need for cleaner, healthier fuel options to reduce health risks to infants from indoor air pollution.
