Omal BSN IV-B Group 3 DRUG STUDY Name of Drug Kanamycin (Kantrex) Dosage -Tuberculosis: 15 mg/kg (maximum 1 g) IM or IV every 24 hours, continue for 18 to 24 months or for 12 to 18 months after culture results are negative. -Bacterial infection: 15 mg/kg/day IM or IV in divided doses every 8 to 12 hours for 7 to 10 days. 250 mg in 3 mL normal saline via nebulizer 2 to 4 times daily. -The maximum recommended dose by all routes is 1.5 g/day. Classification Aminoglycoside Antibiotic Indication -Tuberculosis -Treatment for bacterial infection Contraindication - long-term therapy - hypersensitivity - kidney disease - changes in hearing - asthma - spinning sensation - muscle disorder such as myasthenia gravis - problems with balance - ringing or roaring sound in ears - numbness or tingling of skin - muscle twitching, seizure - urinating less than usual or not at all Side Effects - Signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Nursing Responsibilities - Observe the 10 rights in giving medication. - If Kanamycin contains particles, discolored, the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it. - Inform the patient that the drug may cause dizziness. - Instruct the client not to drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness until they are sure that they can perform such activities safely.

Capreomycin (Capastat Sulfate)

-Adult dose for active TB:10 to 15 mg/kg (up to 1 g) IM or IV once every 24 hours or 5 days a week -Pedia dose for active TB:15 to 30 mg/kg (up to 1 g) IM or IV 5 to 7 days per week, in 1 or 2 divided doses

- pain - irritation - skin hardening at the injection site - change in the amount of urine - ringing in the ears - trouble hearing - dizziness - muscle weakness/cramps - irregular heartbeat - easy bleeding - bruising

- Encourage to increase fluid intake - Observe the 10 rights in giving medication. - Inform the patient that the drug may cause dizziness. - Instruct the client not to drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness until they are sure that they can perform such activities safely. - Advise the client to limit alcohol intake.
