Accommodations vs Modifications Explained

Modifications change the learning objectives so students are expected to learn different content, while accommodations facilitate access to objectives without changing them. Accommodations alter how content is taught, accessed, or assessed but do not modify the objectives. Accommodations vs Modifications

Where as an accommodation is a tool that facilitates access to a learning objective, objective a modification is an adjustment to the learning objective.

Modification = WHAT
Indicates that what is being taught the taught, content, is modified. The student is expected to learn something different than the general education standard standard. The instructional level or general education benchmarks or number of key concepts to be mastered are changed. changed

Accommodations = HOW
Indicates changes to how the content is: 1) taught, taught 2) made accessible, and/or 3) assessed. Accommodations do not change what g the student is expected to master. The objectives of the course remain intact. j

Accommodations & Classroom Interventions


Accommodations are tools and procedures that provide equal access to instruction and assessment for students who are struggling. Accommodations are intended to lessen the effects of a students learning g difficulty; they are not intended to reduce learning expectations.

Types of Accommodations
Presentation (e.g. providing directions in multiple forms or providing an audio version of a text) Response (e.g. use of computer for word processing or the number of p g times a developing skill is practiced) Timing/Scheduling (e.g. extended time (e g or more frequent breaks) Setting (e.g. specific seating or taking (e g a test in a separate room)
