Inertia Formulas

The document provides formulas for calculating the moments of inertia (I) about different axes (x, y, xy) for basic shapes including rectangles, triangles, circles, semi-circles, and ellipses. It defines the parallel axis theorem for calculating I when the axis is parallel but not coincident with the shape's centroidal axis. The formulas given are: Rectangle - Ix'=1/12bh3, Iy'=1/12b3h, Ixy'=0. Triangle - Ix=1/3bh3, Iy=1/12bh3. Circle - Ix=Iy=1/4πr4, Ixy'=0.

Useful Moment of Inertia Formulas

Note: In the table below, the overbar indicates the moment of inertia is taken about an axis that passes through the centroid, denoted as C. Parallel axis theorems are:

I x = I x + Ad 2

I y = I y + Ad 2

I xy = I xy + Ax y

Here, A is the area of the shape, d is the distance from the centroidal axis to the desired parallel axis, and x y are the x and y distances of the centroid from the origin of the desired coordinate frame. Rectangle:
