SECTION 1
INTRODUCTION AND DESCRIPTION
1.1 The Tektronix type 86 plugĆin unit, herein referred to as the TI (Test Instrument), is used with the
Tektronix 580 series oscilloscope. The TI is a fastĆrise, highĆgain, calibrated preamplifier.
1.2 All comments concerning this procedure should be directed to the Metrology Engineering Center,
Naval Plant Representative, Pomona, California. Use of the Calibration Problem Referral Cards at the end
of this procedure is recommended.
1.3 This procedure includes tests of essential performance parameters only. Any malfunctions noticed
during calibration, whether specifically tested for or not, should be corrected.
Table 1.ąCalibration Description

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS1
NOTE
Minimum use specifications are the principal parameters required for performance of the
calibration, and are included to assist in the selection of alternate equipment. Satisfactory
performance of alternate items shall be verified prior to use. All applicable equipment must bear
evidence of current calibration.
The instruments utilized in this procedure were selected from those known to be available at
Department of Defense facilities, and the listing by make or model number carries no implication
of preference, recommendation, or approval by the Department of Defense for use by other
agencies. It is recognized that equivalent equipment produced by other manufacturers may be
capable of equally satisfactory performance in the procedure.

PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS
3.1 Connect the TI to the deenergized oscilloscope.
3.2 Adjust the oscilloscope INTENSITY control fully ccw.
3.3 Set all equipment output amplitude controls to their minimum output positions.
3.4 Verify that all power switches are off, and connect all applicable equipment to the appropriate
power source.
3.5 Turn all power switches on, and allow sufficient time for the equipment to stabilize. (The TI
requires five minutes to warm up.)
SECTION 4
CALIBRATION PROCESS
NOTE
Unless otherwise specified, verify the results of each test and take corrective action whenever the
test requirement is not met, before proceeding.
4.1 VERTICAL SENSITIVITY ACCURACY TESTS
4.1.1 Set the TI controls as follows:
VARIABLE VOLTS/CM control fully clockwise to CAL
AC/DC switch to DC
VERTICAL POSITION control to midrange

4.4.2 Set the TI VOLTS/CM switch to .1 and the GAIN switch to X1.
4.4.3 Adjust the pulse generator controls for an output pulse approxiĆmately 2 s wide, a pulse
repetition rate of 100 kHz, and minimum output voltage.
4.4.4 Set the attenuator for 0 dB.
4.4.5 Connect the applicable equipment as shown in figure 2. Keep the connections as short as
possible.
*Connect, as close as is practicable, the attenuator to the pulse generator and the load to the TI
INPUT connectors (one at a time).
Figure 2.ąRiseĆTime Test Configuration
4.4.6 Adjust the pulse generator, the oscilloscope, and the TI controls to obtain a stable pulse display
on the CRT.
4.4.7 Turn on the oscilloscope 5X magnifier, and readjust the oscilloscope controls if necessary to
obtain a stable display similar to that shown in figure 3.
4.4.8 Verify that any overshoot does not exceed 5% and that the rise time of the pulse as measured
between the 10% and 90% amplitude points is less than 4.4 nsec. (See figure 3.)
Figure 3.ąTypical RiseĆTime Display
