Answer all questions
1) A 45° strain rosette is mounted onto a steel structure. The strain gages read ε0 = -500(10-6), ε45 =
200(10-6) , and ε90 = 300(10-6). Determine the principal strains [5] [CO01] [BTL 3]
2) At a point on the surface of a metal-working lathe, the stresses are σx = -50 MPa, σy = 10 MPa, and
τxy = 40 MPa, as shown in Figure 1. Determine
A. The stresses acting on an element inclined at an angle Ɵ =450 (5 marks)
B. Principal stresses, (3 marks)
C. Maximum shear stresses (2 marks)

3) A plate of dimensions 100 mm x 250 mm subjected to a compressive stress of 2.5 MPa in the long
direction and a tensile stress of 12.0 MPa in the short direction (see figure). Find the stress acting
normal and parallel to the weld. [5] [CO02] [BTL 3]

4) A simple beam ABCDE supports a uniform load of intensity q (see figure). The moment of inertia
in the central part of the beam (BCD) is twice the moment of inertia in the end parts (AB and DE).
Find the deflection at the midpoint C of the beam and slope at Point B. (Obtain the solution by
using Unit load method.) [10] [CO03][BTL3]

5) A symmetric beam ABCD with overhangs at both ends supports a uniform load of intensity q (see
figure). Determine the deflection at the end (D) of the overhang. (Obtain the solution by using the
Castigliano’s theorem.) [10] [CO03] [BTL 3]

6) Derive the buckling load for Pin-Pin (Simply supported) column [10] [CO04] [BTL 3]
7) A slender bar of constant EI is simultaneously subjected to end moments M0 and axial load P.
Determine the maximum deflection and the maximum bending moment (using differential
equation of Beam Column) [10] [CO04] [BTL 3]
Figure 5: Beam Column
8) A horizontal beam AB is pin-supported at end A and carries a load Q at end B, as shown in the
figure. The beam is supported at C by a pinned-end column. The column is a solid steel bar (E =
200 GPa) of square cross section having length L = 1.8 m and side dimensions b = 60 mm. Based
upon the critical load of the column, determine the allowable load Q if the factor of safety with
respect to buckling is n = 2.0 [5] [CO04] [BTL 3]

9) A long slender column ABC is pinned at ends A and C and compressed by an axial force P (see
figure). At the midpoint B, lateral support is provided to prevent deflection in the plane of the
figure. The column is a steel wide-flange section (W 10 x 45) with E = 30 x 106 psi. The distance
between lateral supports is L = 18 ft. Calculate the allowable load P using a factor of safety n =
2.4, taking into account the possibility of Euler buckling about either principal centroidal axis (i.e.,
axis 1-1 or axis 2-2). [5] [CO04] [BTL 3]

10) A thin-walled cylindrical pressure vessel is subject to an internal pressure of 5 MPa. The mean
radius of the cylinder is 400 mm. If the material has a yield point of 300 MPa and a safety factor of
3 is employed, determine the required wall thickness using (a) the maximum normal stress theory,
and (b) the Huber-von Mises-Hencky theory. [5] [CO05] [BTL 3]
11) A hollow shaft of 30 mm internal diameter and 50 mm external diameter is subjected to a twisting
moment 800 Nm and an axial compressive force of 40 kN. Determine the FOS according to the
maximum principal strain theory of failure, if the tensile and compressive yield strength of the
material is 280 N/mm2 and the Poisson’s ratio = 0.3. [10] [CO05] [BTL 3]
12) The load on a bolt consists of an axial thrust of 8 kN together with a transverse shear load of 4 kN.
Calculate the diameter of the bolt using the strain energy theory. Take 3 as FOS. σyp = 285 N/mm,
ν = 0.30 [10] [CO05] [BTL 3]
13) A circular steel cylinder of wall thickness of 10 mm and internal diameter of 200 mm is subjected
to a constant internal pressure of 15 MPa. Determine how much axial compressive load can be
applied to the cylinder before yielding commences according to the maximum shear stress theory.
The yield stress of the material in simple tension is 240 MPa. Assume that the radial stress in the
cylinder is negligible. [5] [CO05] [BTL 3]
