Integration Made Easy!

Class 12 Mathematics

Formula Sheet with Fun Explanations

February 2, 2026

Integration: The Reverse of Differentiation!

Remember This!
Integration = Anti-derivative
If differentiation is like chopping a carrot into pieces, integration is like gluing the
pieces back together!

1. Basic Integration Formulas

The Power Rule - The ”Staircase” Rule
xn+1
Z
xn dx = +C
n+1
Explanation: Think of xn as climbing stairs. When you integrate, you add one more
stair (n+1), but you have to share your candy equally among all stairs, so you divide by
(n+1)!
4
Example: x3 dx = x4 + C
R

(From 3 stairs to 4 stairs, share by 4!)

The Special Case - The ”Flat Surface” Rule

Z
dx = x + C
Z
k dx = kx + C

Explanation: dx means you’re moving on a flat road. For every meter you walk, you
gain 1 meter distance. Multiply by k if you’re walking k times faster!

The 1/x Rule - The ”Reciprocal Friendship” Rule

Z
1
dx = ln |x| + C
x

1
Explanation: 1/x is special! It doesn’t follow the staircase rule. Its integration is
ln—x— (natural log). Think of it as: ”If x is your friend, integration remembers the
friendship forever in a log book!”

2. Exponential Integration
e - The ”Self-Copying” Function
Z
ex dx = ex + C

Explanation: e is magical! Its integration is itself! Like a perfect photocopy machine -

what goes in comes out exactly the same!

a - The ”Growing Plant” Function

ax
Z
ax dx = +C
ln a
Explanation: a grows like a plant. When you integrate (measure total growth), you get
the plant divided by its natural growth rate (ln a).

3. Trigonometric Integrals
Memory Trick!
Sin Cos Cycle:
Differentiate SIN → COS → -SIN → -COS → SIN
Integrate in REVERSE direction!

Sin and Cos - The ”See-Saw” Pair

Z
sin x dx = − cos x + C
Z
cos x dx = sin x + C

Explanation: Sin and Cos are best friends on a see-saw! When Sin goes up, Cos goes
down (negative sign). They always integrate to become each other!

Sec²x - The ”Mountain Climber”

Z
sec2 x dx = tan x + C

Explanation: Sec²x is steep like a mountain. When you climb it (integrate), you reach
the top which is Tan x!

2
Cosec²x - The ”Valley Digger”
Z
csc2 x dx = − cot x + C

Explanation: Cosec²x is a deep valley. When you dig it (integrate), you get Cot x with
a minus sign because you’re going downward!

Sec x Tan x - The ”Rocket Launch”

Z
sec x tan x dx = sec x + C

Explanation: Sec x Tan x is like rocket fuel. When you burn it (integrate), you get the
rocket itself (Sec x)!

4. Special Formulas with Easy Tricks

1/(a² + x²) dx - The ”Archery Target” Formula
Z
1 1 −1 x

dx = tan +C
a2 + x 2 a a
Explanation: Think of a² + x² as a circular target. When you integrate around it, you
get the angle you’ve covered (tan¹) divided by the radius (a)!

1/(a² - x²) dx - The ”Rainbow” Formula

Z
1 −1 x

√ dx = sin +C
a2 − x 2 a
Explanation: (a² - x²) is half a circle (like a rainbow). When you integrate under it,
you get the angle of the rainbow (sin¹)!

1/(x² - a²) dx - The ”Hourglass” Formula

Z
1 √
√ dx = ln |x + x2 − a2 | + C
x2 − a 2
Explanation: This looks like an hourglass shape. Integration gives you the natural log
of the total path length!

5. Integration Methods Made Easy

Integration by Parts - The ”UV Rule”
Z Z
u dv = uv − v du

Memory Trick: ”**U V - V du**”

Explanation: Choose u as the function that becomes simpler when differentiated!

ILATE Priority Order:

3
1. Inverse Trig (sin¹, cos¹, etc.)

2. Logarithmic (ln x, log x)

3. Algebraic (x², x³, x)

4. Trigonometric (sin x, cos x)

5. Exponential (e, a)

Substitution Method - The ”Change Clothes” Method

Z
If f (g(x))g ′ (x)dx, let u = g(x)

Explanation: When the integral looks complicated, ”change its clothes” (substitute u
= something) to R make it simpler!
2
Example: 2x · ex dx
Let u = x2R, then du = 2xdx
2
Becomes: eu du = eu + C = ex + C

6. Definite Integration - ”Area Calculator”

Basic Concept
Z b
f (x)dx = Area under curve from x=a to x=b
a
Explanation: Imagine coloring under a curve from point a to point b. The definite
integral tells you how much paint you need!

Important Properties
Rb Ra
1. Reverse limits: a f (x)dx = − b f (x)dx
(Walking forward vs backward!)
Rb Rc Rb
2. Add intervals: a = a + c
(Cutting a chocolate bar into two pieces!)
Ra Ra
3. Even function: −a f (x)dx = 2 0 f (x)dx
(Symmetrical like butterfly wings!)
Ra
4. Odd function: −a f (x)dx = 0
(Left side cancels right side like tug-of-war!)

4
7. Fun Memory Tricks
Quick Memory Rhymes!
• Sin integrates to -Cos
”Sin takes a minus cos-tume!”

• 1/(1+x²) integrates to tan¹x

”One over one plus x squared, gives angle that’s declared!”

• e integrates to itself
”e to the x, is its own reflex!”

• Sec² integrates to Tan

”Sec squared, to Tan declared!”

8. Common Patterns to Recognize

Pattern 1: f ’(x)/f(x) form
f ′ (x)
Z
dx = ln |f (x)| + C
f (x)
2x
R
Example: x2 +1
dx = ln |x2 + 1| + C

Pattern 2: f ’(x)·ef (x) f orm

Z
f ′ (x) · ef (x) dx = ef (x) + C
R 3 3
Example: 3x2 · ex dx = ex + C

Pattern 3: f ’(x)·[f(x)]n f orm

[f (x)]n+1
Z
f ′ (x) · [f (x)]n dx = +C
n+1
R (x4 +2)6
Example: 4x3 · (x4 + 2)5 dx = 6
+C

9. Integration as Reverse Process

Differentiation Integration Analogy
Chop vegetables Glue pieces back Cooking
Take derivative Find anti-derivative Un-doing
Slope at a point Area under curve Speed vs Distance
Instantaneous rate Total accumulation Rain rate vs Total rain

5
10. Practice Tips
Golden Rules!
1. Always add +C in indefinite integration!

2. Check by differentiating your answer!

3. Simplify first before integrating!

4. Look for patterns - don’t jump to formulas!

5. Practice, practice, practice! Integration is an art!

Happy Integrating! Remember: Practice makes perfect!
