Working Principle

The document describes the working principles of piezo injectors and electromagnetic injectors. Piezo injectors use pressurized fuel and a piezo crystal to control the opening of a needle for fuel injection, while electromagnetic injectors utilize an electromagnet to move a plunger that opens valves for fuel flow. The operation of both types relies on pressure and electrical signals to regulate fuel delivery into the combustion chamber.

Working Principle: of piezo injector

• High pressure fuel is constantly delivered to the tip of the injector, where a needle blocks the fuel
from being injected.
• Pressurised fuel is also delivered to the top of this needle.
• The force of the fuel keeps the needle closed.
• When the piezo crystal is energised a valve at the top of the needle opens, allowing the
pressurised fuel at the top of the needle to return to the tank.
• With no pressure on the needle, it’s springs open allowing the fuel to be injected into the
combustion chamber.
• When the piezo actuator is de-energised, the valve closes and high-pressure fuel forces the needle
to return to the closed position..

➢ Working Principle: of electromagnetic or solenoid injectors

• When a fuel injector is energised an electromagnet moves the plunger.
• This opens the valves, allowing pressurised fuel to squirt out through a tiny hole.
• When not energised a spring pushes the plunger back down allowing no fuel to exit.
• The amount of opening of the plunger is regulated by the amount of electricity sent to the fuel
injector causing the magnetic field to be stronger.
