AUTOCAD
INTRODUCTION : AutoCAD is a commercial software application
used to draft 2dimensional and 3-dimensional models with the aid of a
Computer. Although this description provides an all-encompassing
explanation of what AutoCAD is used for, it does not break down its
uses into the specialized units the software is known for. Therefore, I
shall outline 5practical ways in which the CAD software can be made
used of
AutoCAD is widely used in the civil engineering field because of its
ability to plan sites a lot easier then hand drawings. The main thing is
that if WE want to draft any civil engineering structure (2D, 3D) such as
buildings, bridges, roads, drainage, pipeline, dams, intersection etc. with
accuracy, speed and that can be easily edited, AutoCAD is the best
option.
I. Application Menu: Provides access to filenavigationand
management options. It was referred to as the application
menu in other versions of Revit and other office appl
2. Quick Access Toolbar: Used to display the most frequently
used commands.
3. Ribbon: Featured in most desktop applications, it contains
commands needed for mutine tasks.
4. Infocenter: Provides information related to keyw'ord
searches, product updates, and announcements.
5. Drawling Tabs: Provides the list of opened drawings in
tabs format.
6. Drawling Area: It displays views, sheets, schedules, and
other elements ofthe project.
Newly opened views display on top of other opened views in
the drawing area.
7. ViewCube and Navigation Tools: Allows to choose and
adjusta model's viewpoint. civil
8. LaWEt and Model Elements: Allows selecting and
switching between different laWEts and model views.
9. Command Line: The command line is themain medium of
communication between the user and AutoCAD, besides the
commands available from the ribbon. This is where we
execute and provide dynamic inputs.
I O. Status Bar: Located at the bottom, it provides names,
family, types, tips, or hints on selected element

Importance of AutoCad :
o AutoCAD as an 2D-engineering drafting tool: WE can use
AutoCAD to draw accurate 2D drawings for any engineering
domain and also use AutoCAD to render to 3D models to help in
visualization of the end product. It helps engineers to design,
analyse and solve design issues resulting in accurate designs.
o 3D View: AutoCAD help model 3D objects with colors,
materials and/or textures applied to various surfaces making
them vivid and easier for the user to visualize the end product.
3D drafting of building and bridge repectively.

o Accuracy: AutoCAD enables WE to draw with fractional

dimensions and also define precision to any number of
decimal places, which is not possible to achieve in hand-
drafted manual drawings, hence offering accuracy in all
dimensions.
o Speed.
o Easy to use and edit:
o Powerful Graphics and realistic view

Disadvantage of AutoCad :
o The program has a high cost, due to its license.
o Knowing how to fully use the software requires a lot of time
since there are many functions, and even that they are of little
application, since they are very specific.
o It requires a powerful computer to work with processing speed,
and a high space on the hard drive.
o Most people who want to learn to use this program have to
choose to pay quite expensive courses to learn how to use
them completely.

The mouse
The computer mouse has an important role in AutoCAD.
There are three essential parts of a mouse, namely, the left
button, right button, and a scroll wheel.
DRAWING COMMANDS

FUNCTION KEYS COMMAND

o F1 — Opens the AutoCAD Help window

 F2 — Opens the AutoCAD text window, which shows an extended view of the
Command Line entries. Useful when the Command Line is too small to see what
WE are interested in.
 F3 — Toggles the Osnap tool (what I call the “Basket of Snaps”–see tip 1004) on
and off. This is a super-useful key. The basket of snaps often snaps to an object
that WE did not intend. This is a time-waster that really adds up if it happens
repeatedly. Use this key to turn the basket on when needed and off when it might
cause mis-snaps.
 F4 — Toggles 3D Osnap on and off. See comments above.
 F5 — Toggles Isoplane between Top/Right/Left. For drawing “fake-3D” isometric
drawings. To get into the Isometric drawing mode, hover over the Snap Mode button
at the bottom left of the screen, right-click, and choose Settings. Then under Snap
type, choose Isometric Snap. Now use the F5 key to toggle between the three sides
of the object WE are drawing: top, right, and left.
 F6 — Turns Dynamic UCS on and off. Useful in 3D modeling work.
 F7 — Toggles Grid Display on and off. I use this key in combination with the F9 key
to organize text objects on a regular grid–see Tip 1011.
 F8 — Toggles Ortho mode on and off. One of the most useful keys of all.
 F9 — Toggles Grid Snap (snap to grid) on and off. See comments on F7.
 F10 — Toggles Polar Tracking on and off. Very useful when working with designs
having more than one geometric orientation, as when part of the design is rotated 45
degrees in relation to another part. Note that when WE use this key to turn Polar
Tracking on, Ortho is automatically turned off. In the same way that F7 and F9 are
“sibling” function keys, F8 and F10 are siblings and are often used in tandem.
 F11 — Toggles Object Snap Tracking on and off. Some designers use Object Snap
Tracking all the time and never turn it off. This key makes it easy to turn it on and off
as needed.
 F12 — Toggles Dynamic Input on and off. It seems to me that WE probably either
love Dynamic Input (which puts the Command Line and Status Bar information near
OUR pointer in the work area) or WE hate it. If WE like it but only at times, this key
will help.
