Integers

The document explains integers, which include positive and negative whole numbers, and their uses in various contexts such as measuring temperature and debt. It outlines rules for adding and subtracting integers, emphasizing the treatment of signs during calculations. Additionally, it covers multiplication and division of integers, highlighting that like signs yield a positive result while unlike signs yield a negative result.

Rule # 1 – Same Signs
• If the signs are the same, pretend
the signs are not there.
• Add the numbers, then put the
signs that the number had in front
of your answer.

10 + 5 = 15
- 10 + - 5 = -15

Rule # 2 – Different Signs
• If the signs are different, pretend
they are not there.
• Subtract the smaller from the
bigger and put the sign of the
bigger number in front of your
answer.

How can we check
“Subtracting a
negative number is
the same as adding
a positive” is true?

We can use the same

method we use to check our
answers when we subtract.
Integer Addition Rules

●Rule #1 – If the signs are the same,

pretend the signs aren’t there.
●Add the numbers and then put the sign of
the numbers in front of your answer.

9 + 5 = 14
-9 + -5 = -14
Integer Addition Rules
●Rule #2 –
●If the signs are different pretend the signs aren’t there.
●Subtract the smaller from the larger one
●Put the sign of the one with the larger value in front of
your answer.

Larger value -9 + +5 =
9 - 5 = 4 Answer = - 4
Integer Subtraction Rule
Subtracting a negative number is the
same as adding a positive.
Change the signs and add.
2 – (-7)
is the same as
2 + (+7)

2 + 7 = 9!
Multiplying and dividing integers

**If there is no sign in front of an number you can assume it is positive**

Multiplying and dividing integers

Like signs give plus

Unlike signs give minus
Removing brackets

Brackets mean multiply so if we have:

-4(2), this is the same as -4x2 where we apply our rules
and our answer will be -8.

If I have 5-(-4) we treat the -(-4) as a minus multiplied

by a minus which changes to a plus.
Therefore our answer is 5+4=9
