Two workloads each have an 8 CPU peak demand but the peak of their sum is 12 CPUs.
HP Capacity Advisor
Providing workload planning for HP Virtual Server Environment
Easy-to-use,
software Provides simulation of application workload placement to help IT managers make optimal decisions in order to best configure server resources in a Virtual Server Environment Allows organizations to build flexible Virtual Server Environments, optimize server resource utilization, and reduce costs and complexity Facilitates running multiple workload placement scenarios so the best decision based on the outcome of those scenarios can be made
virtual infrastructure capacity planning
HP Capacity Advisor
Reduce time, effort and complexity of virtualization by
Automatically
tracking and importing historical workload utilization data, saving multiple steps and ensuring data accuracy Handling all the background data manipulation to provide expert results, freeing administrators from complex calculations Integrated with Virtualization Manager which is automatically aware of all the actual virtualization elements under consideration for scenario analysis Easy-to-use interface, designed for the general IT administrator and also benefiting the specialized capacity planner

HP VSE Global Workload Manager(gWLM)
HP Global Workload Manager
Centralized policy-based workload management
Allows
many applications to run on a virtualized environment consisting of 100s of systems with multiple partitions resource allocation and utilization information
Consolidates Provides Offers
utilization data for various types of reports
a real-time monitoring facility that shows actual resources, requested resources, and many more variables
HP Global Workload Manager
Providing higher utilization and reliable service levels
Manage
resource allocation through the central management servers of many vPars spread over multiple systems. Instant Capacity license between nPars on servers based on policies and demand servers based on demand by activating or deactivating Temporary Instant Capacity. HP Integrity Virtual Machines based on business policies and demand resource management policies for a workload throughout a HP Serviceguard cluster.

What does this mean?
- Instead of allocating 2 vpars with 12 cpus each for a total of 24 cpus, you are deploying 16 cpus and still satisfying the computing requirements
gWLM in AT&T Estimated Savings To Date
Original
required number of cpus = 321 Number of cpus using gWLM = 219 Elimination of 102 cpus $2.8M savings Estimated savings with list price of $48k/core(Oracle/Websphere) ISV costs $7.7M savings *Utilization is increased without performance sacrifices/tradeoffs *Management is automatic no increased burden on operations
Financials Around CPU Savings
Savings
per core(List prices)
HP costs - $22,525 ISV costs Oracle/Websphere - $48k
Total = $70,525
gWLM costs
$2500/core When deploying vpar software AND gWLM software on the same quote, you would purchase VSE Suite
$4000/core
Increased Utilization With gWLM
From
a high level, the fact that AT&T is deploying less cpus(33%) using gWLM means that utilization will be better than before you would normally deploy two 5-cpu vpars and they are utilized at an average of 25%, with gWLM, you would only deploy 7 cpus. With the reduced number of cpus being deployed, the same workload on 7 cpus would be utilized at 36% - an increase of 70% utilization.
