28/2 Mircea cel Batran street Chisinau, Moldova January 23, 2003 Dear Kristine, Your trip to Washington D.C. made me envious. Please send some pictures when you have them. I'll show them to Elena and Nelly. I have told them about your trip and they want to know more, so if you can write more in detail how it went, I'll share with them. You should be back to school from your vacation. We are too. Actually I like school. It gives me the pleasure to meet my friends and learn. I wouldn't say that I like all the school subjects, but some of them are of interest to me, as I know that I will need the knowledge I get for my entrance exams at the university and for my future in general. Especially useful are chemistry and biology, as I want to enter a medical university. I still find time to join in for some extra school activities, particularly sports. Tennis brings me a lot of pleasure. By the way Elena joins me for that. We have fun together. Last Tuesday we played for two hours in a row. It was exhausting, but fun. I lost, but hope to take revenge next week. Towards the end of the game Dima came with his dog. Remember the tall guy with the German Shepard? He says "Hello" to you. As soon as he arrived it was impossible to continue the game, as the dog will run to catch the ball and everybody was trying hard to keep it from doing that. So, we all laughed a lot. How are things with you? What is new at school? I'll be happy to get all kind of news from you. Please say "Hello" to Rosetta. Hope she remembers me. And please, pass her one of these photos with her and me. Hope she will like it. I am also sending some photos for you. I hope to get a letter from you soon. Sincerely yours, Diana

200 Stefan cel Mare Street Chisinau, Republic of Moldova August 5, 2003 Dear Stacia, I am happy that you have agreed to keep writing to me. I hope we can learn a lot from each other. First of all, I would like to tell you something about my city. Chisinau is the capital of Moldova. I like the town a lot. The architecture is a combination of new and old which makes it charming. For example, you walk in the central part of the city near new modern banks, shops and restaurants and all of a sudden you see small, old buildings that remind you about the history of the country or a painter in the middle of the pavement with his colors around him drawing something. I really like the old part of the town. Chisinau is more than 500 years old, but it is very young at the same time. If you walk in the evening down the main street Stefan cel Mare, you can see a lot of young people, students of colleges and universities. Sometimes concerts are organized in the main square of the city, and a lot of people go there to listen to music, and dance. Moldovans like to sing and dance a lot. They are very friendly and hospitable, and open their doors to visitors with great pleasure. I hope you can visit my country some time in future. I am sending you some pictures of Chisinau. In my next letter I will write to you about my family, and about my hobbies. I will also send a picture of my family. Please write to me about the UK and your town. I am looking forward to a letter from you. Please also write about yourself and your family. Sincerely yours, Elena

D e I am leaving for the United States next week. I am happy for the opportunity, but it will be hard for me not to see all of you, my friends, for a whole year. I've decided that it would be good for all of us to come together this coming Saturday. In this way, I'll be able to say Good-by to you. Hope we'll have fun! We are getting together at my home at 6:00 PM. My mum will cook dinner; you know how delicious her food is. We will also have the cake you like so much... After dinner I am taking everybody to a disco. My parents will take care of organizing transportation for us late at night to my house for a sleepover party. Please tell your parents that you will stay with me for the night. If they are concerned for the safety or any other reason, they can always call my parents to talk and make sure everything is arranged for us. I hope you can come. I'll be waiting for you. Yours affectio nately, Vicky 2 2 C h A p
W riting to a Sick Friend
Dear Ann, I've heard that you are staying home. Mary told me in a message about your broken ankle. I am terribly sorry about your accident, but you picked a good time to stay home. It is so windy and cold at this time of the year in your town, that even Santa Claus would not dare to get his nose out of the door. So, while others will put hundreds of layers on them to go to school, you can just lie in your warm bed and admire Jack Frost's art on your window-pane.
I hope your friends visit you and help you with the homework. I wish I could be there with you. If you need any help with math, just send me the problems by e-mail; you know I am good at it, so I'll be happy to explain what is not clear to you. Tomorrow afternoon I will send you through internet the pictures from our summer vacation. They are wonderful. So many good memories! Get well soon! Sincerely yours, Cristina
Writing Letters of Request
Dear Bob, It seems like it has been ages since I left the USA. I am back to school in Moldova, in my 12 th grade. I am seriously thinking about my future career and trying to choose the university that might train me for it. I am particularly thinking about applying to some universities in the USA. I would like to have more information about universities in the USA, but unfortunately it is more difficult to get it from here. I've tried to search through internet but it is very time consuming and you don't always get exactly what you are looking for. I would like to ask you for a great favor. Do you remember when we went to the bookstore near your house together and we found the CD with information about universities in the States? I regret not having bought one then. Can you please buy one for me and send it? I will pay for all the expenses, including the cost of the CD and also the postal services costs. A friend of mine is leaving for New York in two weeks, and I will have the opportunity to send the money with him. I'll give him your address so that he can send a check to you. Please let me know how much I have to give him. Hope my request will not create too much trouble to you. Please let me know if you have time for it. Please tell "Hello" to your parents from me. Yours, Dorin

Writing Letters of Appreciation
Dear Catalina, 2566 Cumberland street Philadelphia, August 10, 2003 We have safely arrived home yesterday evening. Our parents met us at the airport. Unfortunately my brother couldn't make it, as he was busy at his work. I'll keep in my memory the best impressions about Moldova and its people. As soon as I reached home last night, I began to tell the family about my vacation in Moldova. It is hard to say what I enjoyed most of all. With so many delightful experiences to choose from, it was difficult to choose what to tell first. The camping in the beautiful oak forest, the fire, "frigarui", and the wonderful Moldovan melodies will forever stay in my memory. The trips to the Saharna monestry, Soroca, and Orhjeiul Vechi, though tiring, gave me an insight of the country's history and Moldovan traditions. I was impressed by the large cellers of Cricova. But the most amazing thing is people's hospitality and openness to foreigners. I'll definitely talk about your country at our World Cultures hours when we return to school in September. Hope the photos come all right so that I can show how green and beautiful your country is. Thank you for such an interesting and rewarding experience. I appreciate you finding time and energy to organize this for us. Sincerely yours, Elisa

Dear Dorin, What a surprise! Of course I am coming, no question about it. I'll enjoy spending a week with you and your family, especially if we are going to the seaside. I love sun and water! I have talked to my parents, and they have nothing against it. On the contrary, they like the idea, as they think I need a rest after the school year somewhere away from Chisinau. Please give me more details about the trip. What should I bring with me? I am excitingly waiting for this trip to happen and will start preparing for it tomorrow. Yours, David
Refusing Politely Invitations
1417 Whittier Street, N.W. Washington, D.C. Dear Mindy, July 7, 2003 It was kind of you to invite me to your party. It will, I know, be lots of fun; and I wish I could come and meet all of our friends. As it happens, however, I am invited to a wedding party to one of my close relatives this weekend, and they rely on my help with organizing some things for the wedding. I regret that I can't be in two places at the same time. I congratulate you on your birthday and wish that all your dreams come true. I have sent you a pre sent. Hope you like it. Enjoy the party. Lovingly yours, Cindy
