Ph 06-3876860 Fax 06-3876129 Email office@[Link] Web [Link] Ruapehu Road, Waiouru Issue 3 20th February 2013 Kia Ora Everyone,
Here at Waiouru School we have a strong tradition of encouraging leadership amongst all of our students. This year, through consultation with our senior students and staff, these six senior leaders have been chosen to represent their fellow students and to give their voice to the leadership team at Waiouru School. I am so pleased to introduce them, and know that they will do a fantastic job representing our From the back; Carson Hepi, Myah Rata, Annalise Ziarno, school this year.
Kaea Mcgregor, Avalon Beker and Marcus Garven.

Another leadership opportunity beginning next week are our school crossing wardens. Constable Peter Marks has been in to train our students to care for the lives of our kids crossing the road at the Ruapehu Road pedestrian crossing. Our crossing wardens will be on patrol in the afternoons from 2.50pm to 3.15pm. It has been identified that the majority of our students are dropped off in cars in the mornings and mainly walk home in the afternoons. If you happen to be available in the afternoons, we would really appreciate any offers of support to help supervise the afternoon crossing times, I will do most of the supervision but I cannot be there all the time and teachers can't leave their classes without supervision that early. It has also been suggested that maybe a "Walking Bus" may be formed for kids walking home, please let me know if you are interested. It has actually been a fantastic two weeks of mingling for me, having met many parents and community members throughout camp. We had a very successful Waiouru School Welcome BBQ, the amazing Waiouru Kindy afternoon, and this week the Friends of the Kindy Meeting as well as the Waiouru Welcome Expo run by our CSO. If I haven't met you yet or if you are just curious about the school please pop down anytime for a tour and a cup of tea. We are a community school and we welcome all of you to our home of learning. One last notice: WE WANT YOU! to be part of our Waiouru School Board of Trustees. Pop down to the school to pick up a nomination form or download one from our school website. Being part of the school board is a great way of being involved with your child's learning, and there is always cake at the meetings ;-) Have a great weekend, Marama

Kerry and Marama will be away for the day tomorrow Thursday 21st Feb. Tina Harding-Gray will be in the office for the 1st part of the morning to take any lunch orders.

Bot Elections Start thinking about who you would like to nominate, or perhaps you are interested in being a member of our school BOT. Nominations forms are available from the school office or can be downloaded from our web page. Nominations close Thursday May 16th 2013 Voting papers sent by Tuesday May 21st 2013 Voting Day Thursday May 30th 2013 All nominations are to be sealed in an envelope and handed into the school office no later than Thursday May 16th. Sun Protection Please make sure that your child/ren have a sunhat available to them at school. We provide sunscreen in all classrooms, and take it with us when on trips. House Sports We will be having House Sports every Tuesday afternoon. Could all children please bring suitable sports clothing and shoes to change into on these days. Help Needed As a part of making a contribution to our cluster of schools we will be hosting the Waimarino Inter-school Swimming Champs on Friday 15th March and (hopefully if we have the community support) an Interschool Fun Triathlon on Friday 5th April. Both events have also huge fundraising potential. For the swimming we have a pretty smooth procedure, but we do need a few volunteers to help us out on the day. The triathlon is a new one for me, and I would appreciate any advice or help anyone can give. If you are able to help out, we would really appreciate it. Please contact Marama or Rachel with your offers of support. FYI (Raetihi hosts Athletics, Orautoha hosts Cross Country, and Ohakune hosts Speeches) Swimming We are swimming most days of the week until the Swimming Sports, so please make sure your children come to school with their togs. Waiouru School Swimming Sports - Friday 8th March - Parent help needed on the day. Winter Sports Expression of Interest We would like to be able to put together a soccer team and netball teams to participate in Saturdays Winter Sport Competition in Taihape. Can you please email Marama, or pop into the office and let us know if you can help. Please indicate if you are available to manage or coach. Tussock Buster Tussock Buster is fast approaching and is set for the 22 - 24 Mar 2013and again we would like to do the BBQ to fundraise for the school. To achieve this we will need man power for 1 or 2 shifts. If you can help please ring Kerry 3876860 or email office@[Link] NZEI Teachers' Paid Union Meeting - the Board of Trustees is releasing most of the teachers to attend their Paid Union Meeting (PUM) in Ohakune (This is a legal requirement) on Wednesday 20th March 2013 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Waiouru School will provide supervision for all students until the end of school, however if you wish to pick your child up at lunch time you may. If you are able to help with supervision of our students on that afternoon please also let me know. If you have any questions or concerns come and see me (Marama) directly. Thank you all very much for understanding the need for our teachers to attend this meeting. Dates to Remember: Swimming Sports Friday 8th March Desert Gala Sunday 10th March Easter Weekend Friday 10th March Tuesday 2nd April

HELP NEEDED Desert Gala The Desert Gala has been organised by a committee of parents and friends of the school to raise funds for our children so that they are able to do extracurricular activities throughout the year, lessening the financial burden on our parents. This is going to be a fun-filled day, starting off with the launch of the Childrens Variety Bash at 10am, followed by a competition between the PTIs and the BASH in a top town type event! Following that that will be a water fight between the BASH and the Waiouru Fire Brigade. Ronald McDonald will be there to entertain us for a few hours, followed by some local talent. There will be a fantastic opportunity to see our very own Kaimanawa horses that live wild out the back of the Army land known as the Argo. There will be three bus rides out to the Argo at $5 a head. The trip will be approximately 1hr30mins in total. We will be taking pre-bookings for anyone who would like to pay in advance and to secure a seat. Ring Kerry 06 3876860 or call into the school office. There will also be stalls, rides, food, raffles and much much more on the day. Our ride tickets will be $1 a ticket, (the amount of tickets will vary depending on the ride) and if families prefer they can pay for tickets between now and the Gala day to lessen the financial strain. Ring Kerry or call into the school. The Gala is approaching fast and we are calling for anyone who is willing to help out on the day. We need people to help with the following; putting up a marquee on the Saturday, ticket sales, horse riding, selling raffles, assisting with childrens events etc. It should only be 1hour of your time on the day. If you can help with anything please ring Kerry 06 3876860. We Want Your Junk Your junk could be the next mans treasure. We want to run a white elephant stall at our Gala. We are after books, clothing, household & outdoor items, tools, etc etc. Anything that you think we can sell. If you have anything to donate then please drop off at the school office.
