Nursing as an Art Definition of Art: 1.

The conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements in a manner that affects the sense of beauty, specifically the production of the beautiful in a graphic or plastic medium. 2. The study of these activities. 3. The product of these activities; human works of beauty considered as a group. Why is Nursing an Art? It requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painters sculptors work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of Gods spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts: I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts. Florence Ningtingale Concepts Related to the Art of Nursing: 1. Self-awareness/self-concept is the mental image or picture of self. All the feelings, beliefs, and values associated wit I or me compose self-concept. 2. Self-enhancement ones needs to improve Knowledge, skills, physically, emotionally to achieve maximum potential. 3. Cultural Diversity is an integral part component of both health and illness because of genetic characteristics, and cultural values and beliefs we learn from our families and communities. To be able to provide culturally competent care to people from diverse backgrounds. Nurses must be sensitive to culturally diverse needs, characteristics and values of individuals, families and groups. Caring: an integral part of nursing. 1. Increasingly, nurses are reporting that new systems of care and the demand to work harder, faster and smarter to keep up in todays competitive healthcare arena are making traditional nurse-patient relationships difficult to attain. As we begin our nursing practice, it is vital that we ask ourselves where caring hands in our priorities in giving health care to our clients. Nurses who accept that there can be no excellence in nursing in the absence of this relationship commit themselves to finding creative means to establish caring relationships. 2. The concepts of person, environment, health and nursing are the most recognized organizing realities of nursing theory. These concepts have provided the boundaries and the shared viewpoint that have helped nurses focus their practice in the past. Recently, the nurse scientists have added CARING to this group of context. 3. Caring is to be attentive to or watch over the needs of another person, thus implying responsibility in the context of human relationship.
