Everyone is getting back in the swing of school as we are a few weeks into the second semester. The staff is working hard to challenge all students at their appropriate levels. The students are working hard and making a commitment to their education. Please take a moment to visit the following site: [Link] This grades schools in Colorado on Academic Proficiency, Academic Growth, and Overall Performance. We scored a letter grade of B for Proficiency, A- for Growth, and an A for the overall score. Erie Middle School was in the top 6% ranking 30th out of 503 Colorado Middle Schools that received grades. Congratulations to our hard working student body and staff for achieving this grade. Erie Middle School held its annual Spelling Bee. The winners from each class did a fantastic job at the school competition on January 22nd. Congratulations to all participants. Congratulations to our participants who represented EMS in the District Band and Choir performances. Also, a big congratulation to the students who are participating in All-State Choir on February 7th and 8th. We are all very proud of you. During the week of March 10th, students will be taking the TCAP (New Name for the CSAP) assessments. 6th, 7th, and 8th grade will be assessed in Math, Reading, and Writing. We held our Renaissance Assembly on Wednesday February 5th. Many students were recognized for the accomplishments in the classroom as well as after school activities. We had over 225 students with a grade point average over 3.5 and over 175 who had a grade point average between 3.0 and 3.49. This demonstrates our students are achieving well. Congratulations to all students and staff on their commitment to excellence at Erie Middle School Just a reminder that Parent Teacher Conferences will be held February 11th and 13th from 3:30-8:00. Please plan on signing up to meet with your childs teachers. The girls had a great basketball season. Thanks coaches and congratulations. The A team is undefeated and the B team is 3-1 in the regular season and both teams won their games at the District Tournament. TCAP Snack Donations
TCAP time is quickly approaching and we are in great need of your assistance. We will need to supply over 3500 snacks and drinks throughout our testing period from March 10th to March 14th. Sixth Grade Emma Thompson is the February student of the month for 6th grade. Emma always produces high quality work in all of her classes, and her passion for learning is a reflection of her curiousity towards the world around her. She is a quiet leader who always goes above and beyond. Emma also has a great sense of humor and outside of school she enjoys her horses and piano playing. Emma, performance outstanding!
Alex Merx consistently demonstrates by her words and actions a respect for her peers, her teachers, and her learning. She is a hard worker and helps all those she works with be successful all while keeping a great smile and attitude.
Seventh Grade Jon Thoren is the 7th grade pick for Student of the Month. Jon is a joy to have in class. He is always engaged in his work; putting forth his best effort and asking good questions. Jon speaks his mind clearly and with maturity, contributing to class discussions often. Jon always considers others when adding his opinion, showing respect and patience for other perspectives. Jon is a great help to other students and to his teachers, and is a positive example to others. Keep up the good work, Jon!
Ashley Schroller is a model student. She consistently comes to class prepared, on time and with a positive attitude. Ashley asks clarifying questions in class that often benefit other students' learning as well. Ashley is always ready to help out a peer or challenge herself by taking her thinking to the next level. Congrats Ashley, your hard work is noticed and appreciated!

Eighth Grade Erin Gilbert ROARs in her thinking, her community work, and her quiet contemplation. She pushes herself to do her best work by thinking out details, asking great questions, and stretching to find a deeper understanding in all subjects. Erin always does her best and works well within all classroom environments. Congratulations, Erin! We are proud of you!
Sonam Tashi has made a choice to be the student he wants to be. He ROARS when he decides to focus on what is best for him. Watch Sonam and you will see a person focused on his future and how to best get what he wants out of life. Congratulations Sonam! You are a great example for student of the month.

COUNSELING CENTER
Your childs report card is a record of his or her academic achievement. Upon receipt of your childs report card set some time aside to sit down and discuss grades privately. Ask questions about grades, classes, and activities. Focus on the positives first; point out the achievements. As you discuss where your child needs to improve, offer support and encouragement. It is also a good idea to check on Infinite Campus at least once a week with your student to keep current on assignments and grades. Infinite Campus can be a tool to set academic goals (goals that are challenging, but reachable). It can be helpful to have your child list the things he or she is going to do to accomplish the goals and evaluate the activities in which they are involved. It is important that children find a healthy balance between schoolwork and activities. Helping with Homework: Strategies for Parents
Make sure you are signed up for Infinite Campus and check it once a week with your student. Review assignments; develop a plan of action Provide a quiet study space Help your son or daughter get organized Set a regular homework time Take short breaks, when needed Help with homework; answer questions; give explanations. Registration for the 2013-2014 school year will be held in February more information to follow. ACCESS testing was conducted in January TCAP will be upon us soon. EMS will be testing the week of March 10th thru March 14th. As we approach the birthday of Thomas Edison, February 11th, our thoughts turn toward the many teachers we have interacted with over the years, those who bring the Edison message and spirit to their students. Edison realized the value of education and often spoke out about the need to get the young ones to think and engage their creativity. We would like to recognize the special accomplishments of these Edison cheerleaders, those teachers who personify the Edison spirit and give their students an invaluable lifetime lesson.
