Letter from the president
A year sounds like a long time, but as Spring
Term draws to close, I cant help but realize
how extraordinarily fast this one is going.
After almost three years as a Drexel SWE
Officer, Im about to cross into my last six
months and, needless to say, I do so with
mixed emotion. Nostalgic, motivated, sad,
excited, proud, even envious of the new
students who will soon experience Drexel
SWE for the first time.
The truly exceptional team of officers I work
with have made this year one of our sections
best in its history. In just this term, theyve
planned our Regional Conference atten-
dance, led a Public Health Forum, piloted a
financial skills program, and much more, all
while gracefully tackling any challenge I
throw their way.
The rest of my term will fly, despite my resis-
tance, but by the end I know Ill be leaving
the team in eager, capable hands. So heres
to the next six months of new events, new
members, and soon enough National Con-
ference 2014!

general body meeting
On Monday, April 14th, 2014, thirty mem-
bers of Drexel SWE gathered for the first
General Body Meeting of the term. This
event included guest speakers from Women
in Cable Telecommunications, an update
about our chapter hosting Region E Confer-
ence in 2015, information about the Mentor-
ship Program, an introduction to the Aspire,
Advance, Achieve Program, and details
about our upcoming events.
The two guest speakers, Tracey Kopper and
Ursula Keating, cable telecommunication
professionals currently working at Comcast,
spoke to the benefits of being a member of
Women in Cable Telecommunications and
careers in Telecommunications.
The meeting then transitioned into the
involvement opportunities for Region E
Conference in 2015. This was coupled with
an incentive for National Society Member-
ship and the internal programs specifically
for National Members. (Ask Meg how she
wants to word this with new rules.) These
include the Mentorship Program and the
newly introduced Aspire, Advance, Achieve
Program. The Aspire, Advance, Achieve
program is still in development but it aims to
help members define goals and develop a
plan to achieve them.
The program follows the participant through
completion of her or his goal and rewards
her or him for commitment to the defined
goal once she or he has achieved it. The focus
of the meeting shifted to the final topic,
upcoming events. This highlighted SWEet
Tuesday, Podcasting Workshop, Public
Health Forum, Personal Finances Workshop,
and Hiking on the Appalachian Trail.
On Tuesday, April 15th, 2014, thirteen mem-
bers of Drexel SWE gathered at Kiwi Yogurt
in University City to get a sweet treat, con-
nect with other members, and relax at the
start of a new term. All of the members that
participated had fun comparing schedules,
talking about future Co-Op opportunities,
and asking their burning questions about
their new teachers and classes. All partici-
pants enjoyed connecting with other mem-
bers in the casual atmosphere. Penn and
Philly SWE are continually invited and wel-
comed at this and all future SWEet Tuesday
events.

The Stock Market Overview and the Personal
Finances Workshop were two highly attend-
ed events by multidisciplinary students that
provided great insights into the financial
aspects of pursuing an engineering career
and enhancing daily life. The interactive
Stock Market event, on April 17th, was led by
Drexels Finance Professor, Dr. Jennifer
Juergens. Dr. Juergens taught on the bene-
fits of early career investment within our
changing economy. She also presented key
information about investing that we must be
aware of and equipped with for success in
todays financial industry.
Similarly, the Personal Finances Workshop
was a strong follow-up event, with speaker
Ashley Feinstein, a recent UPenn Finance
Graduate and certified coach. On May 7th,
Ashley spoke about Knowing Your Worth
and learning to manage your money for a
more stable and secure future. Ashley pro-
vided foundational information on banking,
saving, and making the most profitable value
from our finances. Together, both events
played a valuable role in enhancing mone-
tary knowledge and emphasizing the impor-
tance of effectively handling our capital.
SWE Professional Development Team is
proud to host events that bridge Engineering
and Business concepts, thus providing stu-
dents with necessary skills to understand
technical and tactical sides of entering real
world career fields.
The Drexel SWE Collegiate Chapter, in rec-
ognition of our fruitful history as Founding
Collegiate Chapter of the National organiza-
tion, has initiated a Historian Chair position.
We strive to collect information and give
recognition to the efforts of our pioneering
predecessors, as well as applaud and docu-
ment the efforts being put forth each year to
come in support of the next generation of
Women Engineers.
Prior to the initiation of this position, many
of us had little knowledge of our founda-
tions. In 1946, four years before SWEs
establishment as a national society, Alma
Kuppinger Foreman, whom some of our
members were lucky enough to meet and
speak with during this years Regional Con-
ference, initiated a women engineering soci-
ety with fellow classmates. As the organiza-
tion grew, Ms. Foreman, along with support
from faculty and colleagues, organized the
first conference for female engineers from
nearby Universities in 1949. SWE was offi-
cially recognized in 1950, and ever since, our
chapter has been active in enthusiastically
pursuing the National SWE mission. As the
Historian position grows, we hope to cele-
brate the knowledge we gain and to further
improve our impact as the founding colle-
giate chapter.

Wellness Wednesday: workouts
One of our newer events in SWE has been
Wellness Wednesdays. We come together
after classes or co-op to do a diverse work-
out. Each Wednesday the workout is meant
different in order to cater to all different
muscles in the body to accomplish an overall
body workout. The huge benefit of this event
however is the bonding time between the
members and officers of SWE. The girls
encourage each other and support each other
throughout the workout. Everyone comes
from different physical strength back-
grounds, but everyone puts in their best
effort to challenge themselves. No one
judges, envies, or looks down on the other
person. It is a supportive, positive experience
that is meant to develop better friendships
and closer bonds through working out
together and showing each other our deter-
mination and our weak sides. Not only does
this group workout have physical benefits,
but it provides us with an opportunity to
grow and develop inner strength through
challenging ourselves.
Outreach Podcast Workshops
On May 3, 2014, a Podcast Workshop was
organized for Southeastern Pennsylvania
Girl Scouts. There were sixteen girls in atten-
dence and seven volunteers. Girls worked in
groups of 3-5 and came up with their own
podcast idea. They scripted, recorded, and
edited their podcast using Audacity software.
At the end of the event, girls shared their
podcast with their peers and were able to
take their podcasts home.
The selected SWE member for the member
spotlight is Marina Digregorio. Over the past
few terms it she has shown a great sense of
commitment to SWE. Not only did she set up
and run the dragon boat races, but she
attends almost all of our events. It is a plea-
sure to see how a member can be so affected
by SWE and utilizes our many resources.

This spring, Emily Buck, one of our senior
members graduated from the BS/MS pro-
gram in the Materials Science and Engineer-
ing Department. Emily began working with
her research advisor, Dr. Caroline Schauer,
freshman year as part of the STAR program.
She has be working since then on research
involving electrospinning polymer nanofi-
bers for use as heavy metal ion water filtra-
tion membranes. Throughout her Drexel
career Emily was recognized as an outstand-
ing student and researcher. She was recog-
nized as a Goldwater Scholar (2013-14),
Whitaker Scholar (2014), NSF Graduate
Research Fellow (2014-2017), and a Ful-
bright Student Scholar Alternate (2014). We
could not be more proud of Emily's accom-
plishments in the classroom, the laboratory,
and as a former SWE officer. Throughout her
involvement as the outreach director of
SWE, Emily developed a workshop program
to teach middle school girls about technology
and engineering. The strong foundation she
created has allowed for the continual devel-
opment of these programs including receiv-
ing a SWE program development grant for
the workshop series we have planned for this
summer. After graduation, Emily will be
going to Switzerland for the Whitaker fellow-
ship to do bioengineering research for a year.
After that, she plans to attend McGill Uni-
versity in Montreal to earn her PhD in mate-
rials engineering.
We wish Emily the best of luck!

The Public Health Forum, held on Wednes-
day, May 21 from 5-7:30 pm in the Bossone
Atrium was a huge success. Students from
the School of Biomedical Engineering , the
College of Engineering, the School of Public
Health, and other colleges were in atten-
dance. The event was a part of the inaugural
year of Biomedical Engineering Week. Mem-
bers of the Society of Women Engineers
(SWE), Tau Beta Pi, the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Drexel
Biomedical Undergraduate Association
(DBUA), and other student organizations
were in attendance.
Five presenters described their unique career
paths over dinner. The presenters included
Nicole Johns (Office of HIV Planning), Jen-
nifer Chapman (CHOP), John Domzalski
(Drexel University), Kerry Hamilton

The event was followed by a networking
reception, which allowed attendees to
discuss the topics presented and network.
This year Drexel SWE organized an Alterna-
tive Spring Break Trip through the Office of
Campus Activities (OCA).
Over spring break, Samantha Schneider,
Drexel SWE Vice President, led an Alterna-
tive Spring Break trip to Belle Isle, Virginia
with a group of 9 other Drexel students and a
faculty advisor, Jill Sybesma, who works as
the manager of adult programs at the Acade-
my of Natural Sciences of Drexel University.
The volunteers spent the week building park
benches, installing trail sign posts, repairing
picnic tables, and doing other maintenance
in the state park. During our free time, we
explored the northern neck of Virginia,
including kayaking, visiting George Wash-
ington's birthplace, local museums, and lots
of hiking!
On March 28, nine Drexel SWE members
and officers traveled to Blacksburg, VA for
the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Region E Conference.
The conference was graciously hosted by
Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State Uni-
versity and gathered hundreds of collegiate
and professional SWE members and leaders,
as well as, regional companies and sponsors.
Upon arriving, attendees were greeted at the
Networking Reception, providing them the
opportunity to meet other Region E mem-
bers. The following day started with

opening remarks from Mary Perkinson, of
the SWE Board of Directors and Crane Engi-
neering. Mary shared her experiences with
SWE and updates from the Society before
announcing the start of the day's activities.
March 29 saw a series of diverse workshops
including, "What Makes a Great Leader?,"
"On Track - Women Engineers at the Rail-
road," Women of NASA Langley Pane," and
"Bridging From Engineering to Supply Chain
Management," among others. Speakers
ranged from research to industry expertise,
all offering encouragement and coaching for
members seeking to identify and attain
engineering goals. Between the many other
workshops, attendees found time to meet
with the twenty-two companies present at
the conference career fair.
They were also invited to join SWE leader-
ship in collegiate and professional meetings
to discuss regional business. At the joint
business meeting, Drexel President Meaghan
Paulosky presented Drexel University as the
2015 Mid-Atlantic Region E Conference host.
Later that night, Drexel SWE Vice President
Sam Schneider was honored as part of the
Regional Collegiate Planning Committee
(RCPC) Sponsorship Committee, as was
Meaghan as the RCPC Media Chair. During
the same celebration, Drexel attendees were
Drexel section founding member, Alma
Forman, and Philly SWE section member,
Barb Faust. Both women shared their experi-
ences as female engineers in industry while
Alma had the unique perspective as the first
woman to graduate from Drexel University
with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering,
Alma Forman.
Drexel SWE looks forward to an even more
profound experience at the National Society
Conference, WE14, this October and to plan-
ning the 2015 Regional Conference next
February.
The successful conference experience was
made possible in part by generous financial
gifts from Boeing Philadelphia and Merck &
Co.

I couldnt be more excited to be part of such
an amazing organization as Drexel SWE.
Serving as the publications chair was truly an
enriching experience. Drexel SWE has
exposed me to a number of valuable opportu-
nities that have helped me advance profes-
sionally, academically, and socially. It has
helped me adapt more quickly to living on
foreign soil, almost 4000 miles away from
home. Being an international student is
certainly not easy when adjusting to a whole
new lifestyle and environment; however,
Drexel SWE welcomed me with open arms
and embraced the diversity.
I hope this newsletter does justice to all of
the amazing things that we have accom-
plished over the course of the spring 2014
term. I am honored to share the work of so
many bright and committed people. We set
out to portray a newsletter that would high-
light wellness, professional, and social
aspects of Drexel SWE to illustrate the
vibrancy of aspiring Drexel female engineers.
We are proud to share our various successes
and hope that our future endeavors will
result in similar if not brighter successes.
We appreciate your support and are so happy
to have you as a reader of our Spring 2014
Edition newsletter.
