Unit 3 Lab - HMC Exploration


This hands-on lab will familiarize you with the HMC and how to navigate the menus and
functions.
Students 1 through 10, x11, x13, x21 and x23 will use HMC-1
Students 11 through 20, x12, x20 and x22 will use HMC-2
The normal HMC initial view looks like the following:
The HMC you will be using this week has been modified to present a different view to you. We
have done this to filter out many of the normal HMC functions for this workshop.
1. Login to the HMC using the supplied userid and password.
2. In the upper left navigation pane, use the "+" symbol to
expand all of the options available. Your screen should now show all of the machines
that are managed by this HMC.

3. Select the "Server" that you are assigned to use (Hint: mX-750-1 or mX-750-2),
then in the bottom of the "Task" pane (center at the bottom), select the "+"
( ) to expand all of the available options.
4. Your screen should now look similar to the following:

5. Select the "Properties" of the Host Server, just below the "TASK:" and investigate the
properties of the overall system.
6. On the "General" tab what is the "Service Processor Version?" ____________________
Is this a value that you can use when calling Support (Yes/No)? _______________
7. On the "Processor" tab, how many cores are installed? _______________
8. On the "Processor" tab, how many cores are de-configured? _______________
9. On the "Processor" tab, how many cores are available? _______________

10. On the "Memory" tab, how much memory is installed on the Host System?

11. How much memory is available to be assigned to Virtual Servers? _______________

region size)
14. On the I/O tab, how many adapters are built in? _______________
15. On the I/O tab, how many real slots are in the Host Server? _______________
16. On the I/O tab, how many empty slots are there? _______________
17. On the "Migration" tab, how many inactive Virtual Servers can be migrated
simultaneously? _______________
18. On the "Migration" tab, how many active Virtual Servers can be migrated
simultaneously? _______________
19. On the "Power-On Parameters" tab, notice that there are TWO columns. Use the arrow
button beside "Partition start policy:" (far right side) to view the available startup options.
DO NOT CHANGE THE SETTINGS. Make sure the policy is set to: "User-Initiated."

20. Take note of the "Power-on side." This is either the Temporary or the Permanent side of
the Service Processor.
21. Take note of the "Keylock Position." This is important for the IBM i Operating System,
but is not used for AIX, Linux or Virtual I/O Servers.
22. Investigate the "Capabilities" tab to see which Feature Options have been licensed for our
Host System.
23. On the "Advanced" tab, under "Display advanced settings," how many "Huge Page
Memory" Virtual Servers are defined? _______________
24. On the "Advanced" tab, beside "Display advanced settings" (far right), use the arrow
beside "Huge Page Memory" and set the display to "Barrier Synchronization Register."
How many Virtual Servers use BSR Arrays? _______________
