Step 1:

Just before beginning the khutba, the khateeb (the person giving khutbah) stands up and gives salam
to the people and sits down.

The muazzin (caller to prayer) stands up and gives the azaan (call) to pronounce the beginning of the
khutba.

(Note: the first azaan has already been given)

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuhu

(Note: Some Imams dont do this since this is recommended and not obligatory.)

Step 2:

Khateeb stands up again and begins with Khutbat-ul-Haajjah. This bit is always done in Arabic. Heres
what you should say:

Innal hamda Lillaahi nahmaduhu wa nastaeenahu wa nastaghfiruhu, wa naoodhu billaahi min
shuroori anfusinaa wa min sayiaati amaalinaa. Man yahdih Illaahu falaa mudilla lahu wa man yudlil
falaa haadiya lahu. Wa ashhadu an laa ilaaha ill-Allaah wahdahu la sharika lahu wa ashhadu anna
Muhammadan abduhu wa rasooluhu sallalahu alayhi wa ala alihi wasallam.

(Praise be to Allaah, we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil
of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and
whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah,
the One, having no partner. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger).

Step 3:

Invoke people to be God conscious by reciting the ayats (at least of one) which has the words Taqwa
in it, such as:

(O you who believe! Fear Allaah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam )[Aal
Imraan 3:102],

(O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person, and from him He created
his wife, and from them both He created many men and women, and fear Allaah through Whom you
demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship) Surely, Allaah is
Ever an All-Watcher over you). [al-Nisaa 4:1],

(O you who believe! Keep your duty to Allaah and fear Him, and speak (always) the truth). [al-
Ahzaab 33:70].

End the ayats by reminding people:

Yuslih Lakum Amalukum wa yaghfir lakum dhunubakum wa mayin yuti illaha wa rasulahu faqad faza
fauzan adheema. Amma Baad

(He will direct you to righteous deeds and will forgive you your sins. And whosoever obeys Allah and
His Messanger has indeed achieved a great achievement.)

Fainna khairal hadeethi kitabullah, wa khairal hadi, hadi Muhammad (saw), wa sharrul umur
muhdathatuha, wa kullu bidaatin dalaala, wa kullu dalalatin finnar.

Step 4:

Relate the contents of the Khutbah, choosing topical issues that will address some of the issues of the
Muslims, and addressing them from a viewpoint of advice. [Speak in the language of the majority, e.g.
English]

The prophet (pbuh) and the companions always used to choose the most important issues of their
time. Topics can be to do with ibadat (ritual) or muamalat (societal).

If youre not sure about the topic ask an Aalim (knowledgeable person about Islam) or even the
people attending the khutba. Dont let khutbas become dry!

Then, end the first half with a dua such as Aqoolo qawli hadha wastaghfirullaha li wa lakum

Step 5:

Take a break by sitting down for few seconds. The break splits the khutba in two halves.

Step 6:

Stand up again and praise Allah and invoke peace and blessings on the Prophet(saw) AlHamdulillah
was Salatu Wassalamu ala Rasulullah

Step 7:

Deliver the second half of the khutba. Give advice to people in the best possible manner. Call them to
reflect and act on the advice.

Step 8:

End the second half with durood (praises) and dua.

Allahumma salli ala Muhammadin wa ala aali Muhammadin, kama salaiyta ala Ibrahima wa ala aali
Ibrahima innaka Hamidun Majeed.

Allahumma barik ala Muhammadin wa ala ali Muhammadin, kama sallaiyta ala Ibrahima wa ala ali
Ibrahima, innaka Hamidun Majeed.

Rabbana athina fiddunya hasanah wa fil akhirati hasanah wa kina azabannar.

[Our Lord! Grant us good in this world and good in the hereafter, and save us from the punishment of
the Fire.]

[Duas from the Quran]

End with the words: Wa aqimissalah [And begin the prayer]

So in Summary:

* Khateeb says Salam and sits down
* Muaddhin makes the adhaan
* Khateeb relates the contents of the Khutbah
* Ends the first half with duaa
* Takes a break between two half of Khutbah (about 30 sec)
* Khateeb stands up again and praises Allah and sends Salaam on the Prophet(saw)
* Does the second part of the Khutba
* Ends with Duaa

(Then someone does the aqamah, and the khateeb leads the 2 rakaat jumah prayer in the normal
way.)
fa inna asdaqol haditsi kitaabullah, wa khairol hadyi hadyu muhammadin
(salallahu alaihi wassallam) wa syarrol umuuri muhdatsatuhaa,
wa kulla muhdatsatin bid'ah, wa kulla bid'atin dholaalah, wa kulla dholaalatin finnaar.
